Hi guys, My PC is almost 2 years old and just recently, very faint but very annoying high pitched noise started coming out from my PC. It's very difficult for me to find out which hardware is making this noise. It's either from PSU or the MB I think. The sound is faint but so strong that it hurts my head.
Also, the sound is not consistent. It beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps then stops for a second then beeeeeeeeeeeeps. Anyone experiencing similar issue? Will reformatting computer help?

Thanks,

could from motherboard or graphic card.
no its hardware so you dont need to format it

Power supply, Motherboard or Video card- those 480s ran extremely hot for their time- so its a very high possibility youre hearing coil whine from it

high pitch noise could mean coil whine and its quite popular in GPU's....

as micro mentioned, formatting wont help.

although quite thinkable knowing that your rig is already 2 years old. you will notice right away when it is still new....

suggest to leave your rig in idle... see if it occurs...

coil whine cause by electrical frequencies

coil whine can occur at anytime in a piece of electronics life cycle, could very well be the video card or psu

Thank you guys. one more thing. The high pitched sound is very loud when I have just power on the pc and it quites down after 5-10 min. The sound becomes so faint that if you are not carefully listening to it, you forget that the sound is there. Anyways, I will change my psu first as it is the cheapest hardware out of those 3 for now...:( Hopefully psu is the reason.

An easy method for Distinguishing whether it is the GPU or not, is to Load a video game, Generally during the load screen of a game, coil whine can either stop, or increase, I forget which. MSI afterburner's burn test should replicate that scenario. I hate to see someone buy hardware that they dont need to. Also, I Should mention that if You do Rule out the GPU, and think it is the PSU, Corsairs are warrantied for 5 years in Many cases, mine is. They Could possibly be of assistance. Also, GPU-Z has that GPU load function, You could use that as well.

I don't think it's the GPU Then, since the sound does not increase or change when I play games. I'll check PSU warranty. Thank you!

I was hearing a similar noise coming from my GPU, but it was being caused by the fan.

I changed the fan and the sound stopped (and the sound disappeared when I stopped the fan with my finger too).
