i just got a couple of new parts and am rebuilding by pc (in specs). so far in the MB i've plugged in the cpu power thingy, all the fans (4 pin molex's and the small one), one of my hard drives and cpu/gpu. i haven't put in a cd drive, cpu fan or a monitor.
it starts up perfectly, i can hear the hard drive and see all the fans moving but after a few seconds it shuts off.
why is this happening and how can i fix it? thanks
EDIT: oh and i get the MB bleep once meaning it should work. but it doesnt

Install a cpu fan. If it senses there is no fan it may be shutting off, no experience with Via bios's so I don't know if that will affect your situation.
also unplug the PSU and reset the cmos. leave the jumper there for a good 30 seconds. try it again. Also try pulling all ram but 1 stick put it in the nearest slot.

jimmyz is right, you should always have a CPU fan (and cooler) on the CPU you are using, or bad things will happen (CPU will overheat and die).
Regarding the restarting cycles, I'm almost sure it is PSU related, a 230W PSU has little Amps on the 12V rail (even the best one you could find) to be able to run a Q6600 paired with a 8600GS.

It's either recognizing there is no CPU fan or your CPU is instantly overheating and shutting down. Never ever start a modern computer up without a heatsink on the CPU.

Your GPU alone requires a 350 watt psu just to run properly. Also the beep you here is more than likely for the cpu fan not being plugged into the mobo.

For the love of GOD! u cant run a Q6600 and a 8600GT on a 230 watt psu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

u prolly couldnt even run it without the gpu.

you will need etleast a 400-500 watt psu with 30 amps+ on the 12 volt line.

that it why its not working, the psu is simply not strong enough.

150watts (max) for the cpu, 120watts max for the gpu + HDD, Motherboard, Fans and overhead brings you to 330+ at max load

get a new psu dude;)

I'm surprised it worked period on 230W

i would have expected ball of fire from the psu :D oh that would have been interesting.

twas the cpu overheating. im amazed that the cpu can get hot enough to burn skin in 10-15 seconds.
i do have have a new psu, a enermax revolution 85+ 1250w.
