PC stuttering after updating to Windows 11 and installing Nvidia drivers, polling rate fixes it?

Here are my specs and a summary of the situation:

  • Ryzen 5 3500
  • GT 1030
  • 8GB 3200MHz RAM
  • Windows 11
I reformatted Windows, as I do from time to time, but this time I installed Windows 11. It was quite different from Windows 10 at first, but I managed.

About a week later, I started experiencing stuttering—everything would freeze every 2-3 seconds, including the mouse and screen, though the audio continued without issue.

Here's what I tried to fix it:

  • Updated GPU drivers (didn't help and made it worse)
  • Enabled High Performance power mode
  • Disconnected and reconnected the mouse

The solution turned out to be lowering the mouse’s refresh rate from 1000Hz to 500Hz. Not sure how or why, but it worked, so I kept it that way.

After a few weeks of everything running smoothly, I began noticing that my games didn't look right. Minecraft, in particular, seemed poorly rendered even on max settings, and the FPS was lower than before. I decided to reinstall the GPU driver.

Now everything stutters again, including the audio.

CrystalDiskInfo shows my SSD health at 74%.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :(

To fix it temporarily, you can permanently install Linux on an SSD or USB stick and use Linux until you fix the problem.

There are also many Unix-like operating systems with little manpower that focus on stability and have outperformed Windows in this area for decades.

You can also try disabling fast startup. Fast startup under Windows 11 uses a type of hibernation that makes drivers more likely to malfunction.

And if you want to be rid of GPU driver problems, AMD Radeon GPUs have been performing very well on BSD and Linux systems for years.

I've had an AMD RDNA 3 GPU for about a year now and it worked fine even on OpenBSD.

By which I mean that I have never had graphical issues or stability problems with this GPU on an operating system that is much less used than Windows/Linux/macOS.
