ok boys so iv been halping my buddy with a dual core PD he just got as a spare tinker rig i think its an 805? at any rate its stock at 2.8GHZ and omg does it get hot....now if tried everything diff thermal pastes re seats checking for contact problems everything!!!! it used to idle at anyware from 60-68 and with this last reseat it reboots and wont start i got it to do it 115C!!!!! OMFG!!! i donty get it it comes with some stock intel cooler its an orb type thing with a solid copper core nice and mirror finish im thinking it may be a seating problem obviously but i kinda doubt it i mean iv done everything.....the cooler is confusing it has 4 push clasps like on a grfx crd and a flathead screw driver slot on the top of the thumb press with an arrow swivling one way i was kinda confused about this cooler at first but i eventually got it am i missing something what are they supposed to idle at? its socket 775 northwood core...i mean if i remember right those cores idle hiot but at like 45 not 68!!! so could someone help me out?

Check and see if his voltage is too high.

Hmmm, I don't think Pentium D and Northwood go in the same sentence. My friend owns a 1.8GHZ FSB533 Northwood, he doesn't remember putting on thermal paste and has it overclocked to 2.4GHZ 24/7.

Ah, the wonderful whine-y stock fan :p. Somewhere in my PC guide are video instructions for proper installation of the processor, fast forward to the part where he's putting on the heatsink and you'll be fine :).

Check the thermal paste, the fan on the cooler and the vcore in the bios.

bios update (could be reading temps bad)

its a possability but i did the old fingure test and its all sorts of EXTREMELY hot and i dont think its that because it likes to spontaneously shut off(OTP)

@zek can i have a link to the tutorial?

When you take off the heatsink look if the thermalpaste spread out evenly, and that will tell you if it sits right of the proc. Also since its a dual core you need to cover both cores with a line instead of a dot.

tried both as for if its spread evenly read my other posts iv already tried that.

it used to idle at anyware from 60-68 and with this last reseat it reboots and wont start i got it to do it 115C!!!!! OMFG!!!

I've also a Pentium D, it idles around 48c and under a load around 64c. Their working temp is listed by Intel to be no more than 70c. Anything over this and it will start to shut it's self down, and trying to keep rebooting it may cause it to fry. Defanatly make sure your cooling fan is desinged for a dual core cpu and installed properly. If your still getting a readings that high, the diode that measures the temp may be bad, or the program telling you what the temp is may not be working either.

my pentium D is at 42c, so that 805 can't be right! thats 239 *F

the readings are coming frm the bios so its not under any type of load... and it does infact keep rebooting also the cooler is the stock one for that proc...with a nice pretty copper core....this is kinda irritating.

If it's really 240*F, screw heatsinks, put a tea kettle on that thing :D.

faulty proc maybe?

actually yea the readings may be wrong. Try alot of different programs to compare.

the comp refuses to boot at the moment the xp disk wont boot and its really aggrivating because its all set in the bios correctly jumpers on CS everythuing has been rebuilt and reseated only thing i can think of is a fualty cd drive WTF?! i can only get readings in the bios and though it may be off by 5ºC i really bealive it because it is otp kicking in and touching the heatsink physically as in o noes blister burns you

That guy may have ripped off shoe....

possibly but w/e it is a cd rom drive so if shoe burned iot to dvd it wont pick up as for the cpu i refuse to bealive it ill get a new cooler i am solaris i refuse to lose to something I built!!!

Correct me if im wrong guys but IF it was just Wrong readings the computer would still boot....Since it doesnt they may be correct.

its a possability but i did the old fingure test and its all sorts of EXTREMELY hot and i dont think its that because it likes to spontaneously shut off(OTP)

This was the shutting off I was talking about, if it's doing it on it's own, sure it may reboot after cooling down, BUT IT"S NOT HEALTHY! solve the cooling prob befor it wont boot again.

Oh, and btw that cpu is from the Smithfield family, Northwood is a P4 family.

Sounds to me like it's burnt up.

well ill try another rebuild but holy shit gus honestly....gag me plz i have never had this problem and what frustrates me is that not to be conceded but im pretty compitant in my abilities and this is boggling me i mean honestly WTF?!

o btw thank you ALL for your help and keep it coming if you can ill let you guys kno what happens

I say burnt up because I honestly can't come up with any other explaination. Plus you said it used to idle at 60-68c which is hot, I'm guessing the heatsink or the processor ihs, has become somewhat warped. Possibly the ihs has free'd itself from the processor itself!

oooo thats an idea i mean that hot 1 the paste they use would become goo and 2 metal will flex...........not sure if i should risk pulling the ihs i mean if i practiced id prolly do it and if i can get my freind to say sure i will good good call
