Hello all, need some advice please. I wanna maximize the performance of my motherboard. So, judging by this cpu support list http://www.abit.com.tw/cpu-support-list/mb/amd780_a-s78h.htm It can accept a Phenom 9850 cpu. Is the 9850 just called the black edition or are there two types, a standard and a black one?

Also, what performance does it provide for gaming? I currently have a 6000 x2 but just dont feel it gives any performance, considering I only game at 1280x1024 I get lower frame rates than I would expect from my 4850 and feel it is the procesor holding it back.Would like to have 2gb of excellent 1066DDR2 that deals with any overclock i will be doing so any suggestions for that. Which brings me on to what cooler should I use on the Phenom to produce a nice overclock? Any help as always guys is greatly appreciated.

a phenom 9850 will kill your 6000 X2 and more ram would help to, 2gb just isnt enuf these days

The Phenom 9850 isn't much of an overclocker, however it can overclock to around 3Ghz maybe 3.1 GHz area without much effort. Whether you're on stock or a custom cooler it will not have much bearing on how far they can overclock. The black edition generally can overclock slightly higher due to an unlocked multiplier. I'd recommend the 9950 BE if you can afford it.

Your current processor (6000+ X2) should be enough for gaming and is not a bottlenecking your 4850! Heck I've got a 3800+ X2 and 9600 GT and can play Assassins Creed full detail at about 30-60 FPS @ 1440x900 and Grid at full detail at about 45-60FPS @ 1440x900. I'd say something else is hindering performance; maybe you've got too many background processes? Also moving from 800MHz DDR2 to 1066 DDR2 will not help frame rates you're just wasting money. You're better off buying more ram rather than faster ram, get 2GB x 4 or 2GB x 2 DDR6400 (800MHz)

You see I just dont get this at all. You have your processor at 2.8 and mine is at 3.2, I have a 4850 to your 9600gt and yet in the GRID Demo I only get 35-55 fps!!! COD 4 really bad dips in fps, some games run shockingly bad on my system, stuttery and all sorts. I've had nothing but problems with this system since ive had it :( I have done numerous fresh installs, tried it with XP SP3(which im currently on), vista and no difference. Its just crap as a gaming machine machine for some reason. At this resolution I realy thought I would play most games smooth as but it bad.
When I get my next PC im gonna makes ure its a prebuilt one as something is wrong here andf I just cannot get to the route of it :(

2gb is plenty, what games use more then 2gb none, maybe if your running vista with alot of things running and playing crysis even then u still should have a bit of ram left over, the only reason there telling u have more memory is because, one guy has 3gb's and the other has 8gb's big deal, over 2gb's is useless. dont get me wrong more memory is always better but for todays games and application is a waste of money

Absolutely right. I tried 4gb ram to see if that was the problem, only effect it had was slightly quicker loading and that was it. No, something else is wrong here. I have a corsair 620w psu, looking at voltages in speedfan...on the 12v rail it says "6.44" is that correct? Or does it seem stupidly low...any ideas???

speed fan is a rough estimate, and most of the time is way off lol, the only way to test it is using a multimeter to your psu, or check your bios for voltage levels, it has to be software/driver related if your temps are ok

If you are currently hitting 11.7k in 3dmark06 as you mention in your specs, then that is right on par with other AMD systems with dual core running 3.0Ghz.

IF you want to get more out of your system you need to try pushing your RAM harder. You may end up with a slightly lower cpu clock, but a higher ram freq. Which will mean more bandwidth and more performance vs just a high cpu clock.

One other note. A phenom will be a moderate upgrade for you. Not a huge amount of performance will be gained from 3.2Ghz dual core to a OC'd phenom @ 3.0Ghz.

Here is a techpowerup review of the 4850, this is running on a 3.6Ghz Core 2.

So with the processor not getting the most out of the 4850 framerates should I go for a high end graphics card as I want over 60fps in most of my games. I mean as far as GRID goes I've seen benchies of the 4850 doing more fps than i get at higher resolutions so it has to be cpu bottlenecking surely?

Well if you want over 60Fps and want high details/High res...then yeah a higher end video card would be a good answer.

You could also make the switch to intel and get a core2 like a e8x00, and push that to 4.0ghz.

ZenZimZaliben is right, u might see slight performance in some games and others not, 3dmarks06 is crap, is merely based off your cpu score not just gpu, jumping to a phenom well give u 5 to 20% performance, in some games. or less in others, cause some application, or games don't utilize the four cores away, stick with what u got, and just wait for amd come out with something better or jump to intel

hes video card is fine ZenZimZaliben, is its just slightly bottleneck by hes cpu

I did say his card was bad. Only that he was scoring exactly in the range for the 4850.

If he wants higher res, more detail, max filtering, then he will need to upgrade. Otherwise he should be able to run most games at least very closed to maxed out at 1280x1024.

there nothing wrong with hes card, he can play games at 1600x105o with almost all high settings. he just needs more cpu juice lol

Lol..that is exactly my point.

He wants to know how to get more out of his system...I am saying there isn;t much else he can do beside OC his Ram a little more or buy new stuff.

His specs are nice and pretty well tweeked. I dont see much room for big gains without spending cash. If he is going to spend cash then I wouldn't suggest the phenmon as the answer to that. That was his question.

i hear ya agreed

Crysis uses 1.5gb, supcom uses about 2gb if you have about 4gb. Not including the os and all the programs running.

I think a phenom would be a cool upgrade :) and if you want a really good cooler get a thermalright 120 extreme.

thats my next jump is intel atw

like i said mostly all games don't use more then 1.5gb, except for games like supcom, look if hes on a budget stick with 2gb, if he wasent to be future proof then get 4gb or more

Yeah but if he's gettin ddr2 remember it is at its cheapest atm :D its about £10 for a gb.

one of those new fangled 790 chipset AM2+ mobos will allow a phenom to its full potential but as a cheap upgrade the phenom on its own is excellent the 9850 goes to 3.1ghz like someone else said cooler dosnt matter because its voltage and chipset that hamper clocking, if it only going to 3.1 regardless a new cooler is not going to allow it to go higher, a new cooler is only needed if its getting too hot at a high clock

be aware that the 9950 is high watt yer board might not like it much

vista itself is using 1.1gb or so with vista taking up the most ram infact almost all of it
then add in 800mb for oblivion some games use 1.2gb of ram

it makes sense to go 4gb and 64bit games use up a lot and you want some extra free

vista doesn't take 1.1gb lol, more like 500 to 700mb, and with a little tweaking in services u can save up some memory, and save processes too

thats vista x64 on desktop and opera.

its been a few months since i last used vista cause its crap, but is that 33% free memory or used
