Point of overclocking the memory?

I thought 1:1 ratio gives best performance. and then I see people overclocking
their ram above its rated speed.

Shoudn't they rather underclock their ram to match 1:1 performance?
( especially for Q9xx and ddr2 800)

So which gives better performance? high ram clock or 1:1 ratio?

Is there any significant gain at all for having 1:1?

I think the only big difference is it eases the load on the chipset, possibly leading to a higher stable overclock. Personally I'd focus more on timings as bandwidth won't show big benefits until nehalem or if you're using amd.

Mhz is the name of the game with Intel rigs. With amd it was all about an overclock with super tight latencies. With Intel 800MHz is ok, but things will really open up @ 1000MHz or better if you ram can take that much of an OC!

Without seeing your system specs or picking a specific set of ram, this is a very general statement!

Always found that on intel 1:2 is the sweet spot don't know why but seems to perform better.

I believe 1:1 according to the chart...

And if that chart is right (*ahem* and my calculations *cough*) these GSkills are the sweet spots...
