If you have purchased a game at one of the main sites (Steam, Epic, etc.) can you make use of DLC bought from another site and install it on your active game?

My suspicion is with modern titles you are unable to do this because of the large amounts of proprietary anti-cheat and anti-theft schemes each stores packages with their products.

I don't think you can just buy the DLC of a game that you don't own on that platform, then it'll say you'll have to buy the game first....

I stopped before the point of proving that it won't.

To be clear my only aim was to inform any purchases I make going forwards. For not the first time I'm reminded why so many people play one game for years and live happier lives.

If you have the game on Steam and buy a DLC from a 3rd party seller like Instant Gaming, Fanatical or Humble Bundle you can activate them on the respective platform, Steam in this case. But if you buy a game on Epic and the DLC on Steam it probably won't work.

Most platforms require you to own the game before you can buy the DLC. If you have a key for a DLC, you can try activating it through Steam. It's not guaranteed to work, though.

Yes, I bought a game on Epic that is also available on Steam. MP of game I was looking to collect a few DLC for is run through servers hosted on Steam.

This was the reason for questioning how transferrable content purchased from Steam was to a game loaded through Epic. Doesn't appear this is possible so I will purchase any DLC at price offered on Epic.

I guess that's not doable, then. :( You can try linking the game to Steam, but it'll probably only work as an external link.
