Properly connecting everything (getting the one long beep)

Since I'm getting the one long beep, it seems something is wrong with the motherboard or the memory. The memory is fine, it's inserted properly and secured and the motherboard definitely isn't dead, but I need to know what might be missing.

The most obvious is that the VGA and DVI cords are not plugged into the monitor. The DVI goes into the video card, right? But where does the VGA go? The motherboard has a VGA port it seems, but it's the port with the pins. I have those connectors where one side has the VGA port with holes in it and the other side has a DVI port with the pins, but since I don't have a cord that has the DVI port with holes in it, I don't know how I'm going to get the monitor connected to the VGA port.

The VGA ports only have pins, except for the connectors. However, since the connectors have DVI pins and I don't have any cables with DVI hole ports, there doesn't seem to be any way to plug something into the board's VGA port. Did that make sense?

Bad memory. Swap one memory module across all four DIMM sockets.

Wow, that was confusing. Can you fill out your specs in the user cp? So, to clarify, you have a monitor that is unable to connect through dvi, only thru vga (d-sub)? There are converters to place on the end of a dvi cable to connect to vga. They should come with the monitor, unless it has a vga cable.

Does the long beep happen as soon as the system is turned on? If so, you may have not connected the graphics card power cable as some cards will beep.

I unplugged the video card and the memory, got the continuous beep and three short beeps. Plugged the video card in, left the memory out, same thing. Put the memory back in too and now it's back to one continuous. So I don't think it's the memory or video card.

How many sticks of RAM do you have, pull out 1 and try? Fill out your system spec's so we can help you further.

I have 2 sticks of RAM. I moved them around a bit and they were causing the beeps when it didn't detect any memory it seems. So now I've fixed that, but there's still the continuous beeping, which I still think is due to the not being connected to the monitor.

The monitor has ports for VGA and DVI. However, the port on the motherboard is the VGA port that has the prongs sticking out of it. The converters have the VGA input port (the port with the holes where the pins are inserted), and on the other side of the converter is the side of the DVI with prongs.

VGA holes--> =[converter]+ <--DVI plug with pins.

A VGA plug can be converted into a DVI plug, but not the other way around. So I am unable to plug into any VGA ports. Main point: There is a VGA port on the motherboard, but I have no way of connecting to it.

Once again, if you fill out your system specs in the user cp, we will be able to better help you. And you are incorrect, a dvi plug can be attached with a d-sub connector (which is equivalent to vga). It doesn't go from vga to dvi.

But do you understand the basic idea about the connector I'm trying to get across?

VGA (f), DVI (m). There are no female DVI ports outside of the video card, and there are no female VGA ports outside of the connectors. I have one cable with two male DVI plugs on each end, and one cable with a male VGA plug on each end, and I am trying to figure out what to do with them.

If you have more questions, just ask them but don't wait for an answer, because I'm going.

Still not seeing the problem. You should have female ports on your mb and monitor, and male ports on your cable, which it seems like you have. So just plug in the vga.

Or I guess your saying that the vga on your mb is male? That doesn't make much sense to me and I haven't encountered it, but I would imagine there is a converter for it.

Try starting the machine with a single DDR2 667 module.

Was this system always running before this problem and it has suddenly happened, or is this a new build/upgrade? From what I can decipher you need a DVI/VGA adapter which comes with most GFX cards these days, I could be wrong in the deciphering part though. More info needed, fill out your system spec's.

It's a new computer. And what more info do you need? Hdd, DVD drive and case shouldn't matter right now.

And yes, that's what I was saying. The motherboard only has a male VGA port, which doesn't make sense. The connectors have a female VGA port on one side; however, the other side is a male DVI port, and the only female DVI ports anywhere are on the video card. I do not have any way of connecting to the motherboard, apparently.

That male port on your MB you keep talking about is a COMM port. Most video cards now only have two DVI connectors on the back; however, they all come with DVI to VGA adapters. I don't know if you've tried to force that 15-pin high-density VGA connector into the 9-pin COMM port of the MB but if you have stop trying. All the video outputs from your computer will be female (VGA or DVI).

Ok, does your video card have a 6-pin/8-pin power connector on it? If it does make sure the power cable is plugged in and secure. That could be the reason for the continuous beep. (Do you have a video card?...I can't tell from your posts) <- This is why system specs would help us help you.

*edit*
The male VGA, could it be a serial port mistaken for a male VGA?
oops...didn't read beer's post...beat me to it.

Yeah I don't know how your refusing to give specs. If you simply would have given us the mb model you have, we could have found it online and seen exactly what your dealing with, and your problem would already be solved most likely. Filling out your specs would eliminate the need for you to do all this confusing explaining and clarifying, as we still don't know whats going on.

The most obvious is that the VGA and DVI cords are not plugged into the monitor. The DVI goes into the video card, right? But where does the VGA go?

Yes the DVI cable goes from monitor to video card. Period. If you can plug both ends then forget about the VGA cable.

First determine whether your monitor has got a DVI socket or VGA socket (or both). If it has a DVI use that cable to DVI socket on video card. If it's got only VGA, use the VGA cable and get a VGA/DVI adapter so you connect the monitor to video card.

I doubt that's causing the beep though. My dad once connected the VGA of his monitor to motherboard VGA and DVI of monitor to DVI on video card (at the same time!) and all he got was a somewhat blurry pic which he kept blaming on the monitor until I realised what he had done.

It might be a defective graphics card which gives you the beep. To check that out, remove the graphics card and connect monitor (by VGA) to motherboard.

Absolutely unbelievable. I forgot to plug the video card back into the power supply. That's what was causing it. This kind of thing happens every time I try to think past 10 pm.

Also, I filled out most of the specs in the user cp last night. If you want specifications in the thread, request so, rather than telling me to put it in the user cp. It was also 11 pm on a weeknight, so I'm not usually going to remember to post specs at that time.

Hate to tell you so, back I asked that question about 17 posts ago, good to hear you've solved the issue.

lol...didn't even read that post of yours...i gave him the same advice as that is what it sounded like. At least he figured it out. :toast:
