Hello

I have a xpg 650w core reactor and i hear a click everytime i turn ON/OFF the pc

it is quite audible

i´m wondering , is there any problem ?

I´m sure i properly seated all cables ( double checked )

never heard this with any past PSU

Thanks

it's a relay and completely normal.
BeQuiet PSUs are famous for that as well.

You only need to worry about PSUs if the magic smoke escapes (complete with lighting and sound effects) or if your PC bluescreens or restarts unexpectedly.

Relay clicks and coil whines are normal and healthy noises, even if they're undesirable.

Hey guys sorry being insistent but this is how it sounds like

It got me very worried ( despite core reactor being a good PSU)

The first sound is me pressing the power button on the case and the second one is the PC turning off with the click

Thanks

i use it on a surge protector (quality one)

Yeah, totally normal. I buy a lot of Corsair RM and RMx PSUs and most of the 2017-2020 models made that exact noise.

I also have PSUs within 20 feet of me from Antec, Seasonic, and Superflower that make the same relay-based clicking noises.

It's a relay, the fact it makes that exact same noise every time should be reassuring. If it was getting louder or worse each time, it would be cause for concern, but repeatable noises that don't change are usually by design, so stop overthinking it and don't lose any sleep over it :)

Really!?

Electronechanical relays make a click noise.

Honestly you need to get on youtube and do some studying

And modern Seasonic. It's normal.

Yes, it's normal.

sorry if it sounded dumb guys but my previous XPG was a pylon 650w and i´ve never had any noise

i swapped my sata drives for a m2 , my 4070 for a 4070 super ( had a good deal ) and replaced the PSU for core reactor 650w

this noise got me worried since i´ve never heard it

Yes, it's normal.
Electromechanical relays
use a coil winding, an armature switch with contact points and possibly a return spring, they rely on a small current to close the switch inside of the relay casing typically, and are safer than having a hand operated switch controlling a lot of current

It's better to ask questions than to die stupid. Just don't worry about it. :)

i will list my full build

despite the PSU click noise , the core reactor is a good idea for this build ?

TUF B550M gaming plus
5700x3d
32 gb 3200mhz ( 4 sticks )
1 m2 sata adata legend 800
4070 super ( it uses the new connector , used the connector on the PSU and it split in 2x8 pci-e pins , connected both)
3 case fans

thanks

There are also Solid State Relays nowadays, it all depends on the manufacturer.

If anything the only time you should be worried is if your pc wont complete POST or turn on at all, or if you have a burning smell, or if you are experiencing BSODs, or sudden screen blackouts while doing stuff on your rig.

Start doing some studying on youtube and use your search engine on your webbrowser first.

What's the core reactor?

What's the core reactor?
core reactor 650w , the first model ( not any revision)

i´ve heard the core reactor 2 is somehow worse than the original

It's fine. Aris (who runs Cybenetics and HWBusters website, who also used to review PSUs here on TPU) has given it the okay so that means it's a decent unit.
Please, stop worrying about it and just move on :)

Ah that! Yes, it's fine.

Seems a lot of psu reference sites have disappeared unfortunately, I used to use johnnyguru, realhardtechx.com, another under jonnylucky or something, it isn't updated enough though.

I´ve used this site here ( it lists the first core reactor being A tier , my model )

thanks

Personally, i like big relays that go Ka-chunk.

As mentioned by others, it's a relay that (usually on these modern PSUs) bypasses / switches the surge/in-rush protection so as not to bring down the operating efficiency. You're more likely to find this on 80 Plus Gold and better PSUs.

I've got some older version Corsair TX-M PSUs that have the same also (Gold rating - OEM: Great Wall), as well as Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro (OEM: Seasonic) that do the same.

Your old XPG Pylon PSU was likely only 80 Plus Bronze rated so, assuming it even had effective in-rush protection, probably didn't have concerns about it impacting efficiency.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but.... what? This is normal.

The new design PSU schematic has a relay because there are two separate circuits (power supplies). One for 5v/12v STBY and when PS-ON is returned the second PSU it's powered on.

It can be done with a triac or mosfet but realys are cheaper and more relaiable. This relay also totaly insulates the second PSU from power line when PS-ON is not there.

You can ask Aris also, he always responds to his forums/discord
