Using Asus Prime H370M-Plus motherboard. First build and the fan settings in BIOS seem strange. I briefly looked around before updating from the version it shipped with and seem to remember it allowed setting the PWM fan speed based on cpu/mb/HDD temp individually or as a composite. In current BIOS this option is replaced by "Optimize all fans" which sets all fans to PWM > Manual. CPU fan curve is fine I guess. Both case fans lock into 98% as the optimized, and now lowest manual, setting. The other three non-full speed options (Normal, Silent, Turbo) display considerably more realistic temp reactive curves which are disregarded in use for the same 98% base fan speed. DC settings for the case fans work as displayed.

The stock Intel cooler for my i5 8400 and two 140mm case fans that came with the CM Master Pro 3 case are cheap but I don't suspect they are the root issue. Before I consider replacing or adding more fans I'd like to figure out if there is a workable solution other than DC. No point in buying PWM fans if they don't function.

Are the stock case fans 3 pin or 4 pin? Normally they are 3 pin (DC). To use the PWM settings you must have 4 pin (PWM) fans. That would explain why they work normally with DC settings. Once you buy 4 pin PWM fans, they should work fine in PWM mode. All your fan headers are 4 pin, and can use either type of fan.

Three pin of course. Was so focused on safe installation and then software settings I didn't even consider that. :slap:

Pretty straightforward replacing front case fan with a high force version now that I know what the problem was.
