Quick question. I just bought a Thermalright XP-90, and I was wondering if it made a difference which type of fan I use? I removed my R120 and am now using it for my HTPC.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to try and keep the weight of the HSF below 450 g. The highest I'm willing to go is 500 g. The XP-90 weighs 360 g by itself.

The recommended Panaflo weighs 110 g. It's rated at 48 cfm @ 30 dBA.

The fan I am considering getting is a JMC (85 g). It's rated at 66 cfm @ 40 dBA

Since the XP-90 is aluminum, most of the work is done by the heatsink, so the output of the fan is not as important. I'm mainly looking for:

1 - Silence
2 - Weight

Finding out how loud a fan is not hard. Most of them say it on the packaging. Finding the weight is another issue. If anyone has a suggestion for a light-weight fan, PWM or DC, let me know.

well the work is done by the heatsink and air. unless the heat is removed from the sink then its not doing anything....so, you could remove the heat from the sink actually by putting a nice 120 on the side directly over it with no fan on the sink itself...thats what im doing actually and it works sweet.

well this heatsink works well on its own or with active cooling. the panaflo is a great fan btw. and weight on the motherboard means very little as you will need the backplate for skt 775 install. after all if the beast that is the xp-90c is fine on any mobo the alum one will have no problems. btw if u want lots of cooling silently get a artic cooling 92 or 80mm fan. they work well and will give plently of cooling.

You said you use the XP-90c. What fan do you use?

i have the xp-90al (the one u have)
i use a thermaltake 90mm fan (link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811999108)
it is a 56 cfm fan but its very loud at ful tilt. this heatsink doesnt work as well with high flow fans like the copper version does. thats why i reccomend the articcooling fan i posted above.
