Are you looking for some informations on how to setup a file hosting server on your Qnap ?

there should be Nextcloud or Owncloud available as plugins on the Qnap store.

yup. I'll look into those plugins once the box has restarted. Just testing some configurations

I have another suggestion : use the embedded File Station app instead of those 3rd party fileservers.

All you would have to do is:

1/ In your Qnap Control Panel \ Priviledges \ Users, create a user + strong password, and set some restricted priviledges to the File Station app only
2/ Register a free dyndns account and set your router with those credentials ( This way it would be easier to share your public url with your friend(s) )
3/ Port forward the inbound 443 port from your router to your Qnap
4/ Give the url to your friend ( https://thedyndns.domainyoucreated.com:443/filestation/ ) and let's share some files

I got port forwarding and everything else setup but Qnap overview still says internet connection failed because ports aren't open even though my router says portforwarding is active and everything passed through just fine.

I might need to restart my router.

Please note that usually you can't test loopback dyndns adresses ( such as https://thedyndns.domainyoucreated.com:443/filestation/ ) from within your LAN boundaries.

You have to test it from a different location (friend's home)

On the other hand, if https://192.168.1.XXX:443/filestation/ is accessible from your local browser, at least you know the filesharing service is up and running.

Also, did you make sure that the NAS UI is set to allow HTTPS connections on port 443, and not just the default 8080 plain HTTP web port ?

Yup. I did all this.
