I have a Gigabyte P35-DS4 (rev 2) mobo and now I'm considering upgrading the 8Gigs of GSkill RAM I have to 16GB. Unfortunately it seems my mobo only supports DDR2 1066*/800/667 memory. For me to get 16GB I'd have to have 4 x 4Gig sticks, but in searching places like Newegg for this type and amount of RAM the prices and availability seem absurd.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions or advice on this.

Thanks :)

Sry to say it but ur motherboard officially don't support 16gigs only 8gigs in 4 blocks.

but the speed ain't max you can reach that by oc'ing.

taking from Gigabyte.com and that's what it says about ur mobo ;)

Well that sucks. So I'd have to upgrade the mobo just to have more RAM. Hmm......

DDR2 is extremely old tech, DDR4 is released but not yet in full swing. You won't find it new for reasonable prices, you're better off looking for second hand DDR2. The only other alternative is to switch to a more modern socket that supports DDR3, as it's the cheapest memory available these days.

So that would mean upgrading the mobo and the CPU, right?

There are Socket 775 motherboards that have DDR3 support, so you could keep your processor.

Well, Rocket ma man....can you recommend a good mobo that would work with my Quad?

Again, it would be a second hand affair, I doubt you can buy 775 mobos new. @puma99dk| 's was a decent suggestion, there are numerous boards, it just depends on whether anyone is selling them!

A quick google or ebay of "Socket 775 + DDR3" might net you some results.

Post your options and we can look and see what's gonna work.

Wow, that brought up a huge list of boards. So many choices how do I weed through all these guys?

I must concede defeat, I was with AMD through the Core2 era (too poor to afford big boy gaming chips like the 6600), so I know nothing about 775 boards. I wasn't gaming or into benchmarking then, so my knowledge is nonexistant.

you can find a LGA775 that support ur CPU and DDR3 but dunno if that's possible.

like Gigabytes GA-EP45T-UD3LR

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3487#ov

it supports 16gigs of ram.

Or the Gigabyte P45t-ES3G. I had one till recently, sold it on here. It supported 16GB of DDR3-1600, and ran it well.

Anywho, my point was not that you missed it. It's that there are fairly regularly socket 775 boards for sale on here that you would likely get for a decent price, and not inflated like ebay or Craigslist.

I saw that even though you have backed off to probably just a GPU (in your other thread), it wouldn't hurt to keep your eye on the Buy Sell Trade thread here.

sh$t...i JUST parted with a second hand optiplex that was 775(i think) with ddr3,,,,, I would have given it to You free.Anyway, if You REALLY wanna go that route,,, I'd look on Craigslist if You wanna do it cheap though, a LOT of people have old PC's that they are trying to offload so they can upgrade. Personally I would suggest that You save Your pennies up, and buy a new rig, I'm in the process of building a Gaming PC right now, and stricktly through newegg, and Ebay I did it for around $400. I dunno if You posted Your budget, or if upgrading is NOT an option, but putting $$ into Old builds is Really only a good idea if there is NO other option what so ever....

Ok, here we go then......Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR on eBay. Looking through the list, calculating finances.....lol. Perhaps, like jboy said, I should think about building a new rig. Hmm....

IMHO, like I suggested in the other thread, you really should

Go to gigabyte.com and look at board lineups
