I've noticed that there seems to be some confusion about Rage and the id Tech 5 engine, and I am here today to dispel some of that.
So, without further ado:
GRAPHICS:
id Tech 5, along with every id Tech before and (I'll put money on) after, will NOT use DirectX for graphics - for many reasons (including cross-platformness). John Carmack has had a rant about OpenGL vs. DirectX in 1996 and has thus far stuck with it. He also states he uses open source stuff so that later he can release his engines as open source. Suck that Microsoft.
(A bit of trivia: id Tech 1 is the only id Tech that does not use OpenGL for graphics)
I would like to post a small rant on how many reasons OpenGL is better than DirectX, but I'll save you all some eyeache.
PLATFORMS:
Rage will work with Linux. You might have to wait a week or a month or so, but I am willing to bet that within 3 months anyone here with Linux installed will be able to play Rage in Linux (assuming there aren't any non-Rage related errors).
Rage will also work with Macs, as the first tech demo was on a Macintosh computer, but frankly I don't care about Macs so I haven't done any research.
AUDIO:
So I'm not sure how id is going to do sound, but id Tech 4 used OpenAL (albeit over a patent dispute). That, coupled with Linux, and I think they will either use OpenAL or their own sound engine, but I would hope for OpenAL just for EAX
.
GAMEPLAY:
So we all know about shooting and racing. Congrats on that, but apparently the game will take a dramatic turn halfway into the game. No clues as to how, so far.
Going for a T (for teen) rating? Oh, gods, id do mature up some.
