I have had a few LSIs fail with similar messages and its always the card.

If yours does have a BBU thats the cheaper try to see if it still does it.

Sorry but what is BBU ?

Battery backup. That's what the error is referring to, it's emptied the cache cuz there's no power/battery to save contents.

thank you.
do need to backup any raid configuration? or do I just simply take off the old battery and put in the new one?

The config is saved to the card. You can just shutdown and swap the battery.

If the issue happens again after a replacement then the card is bad because the cache nand is failing.

Cache is not nand, it's RAM.

Depends on model but its off topic.

True, but the ones that have a BBU use RAM. The whole point of the BBU is to keep the RAM powered.

Sorry but what is nand?

NAND is flash memory, it is non-volatile memory. It is used in things like USB Flash drives, SD Cards, and SSD. It's usually slower than RAM, but doesn't need to be constantly powered.
RAM is volatile memory. It's usually faster than NAND, but needs to be constantly powered or the data stored will be lost. That is why RAID controllers with RAM cache need a BBU. If the power to the machine is cut, the BBU keeps the RAM alive hopefully long enough for the power to come back and the contents of the RAM to be written to the disks.
