Rampage IV extreme memory fiasco...or maybe just a question

Hi,
New to the forum, name is John. My PC is a R4E mobo with ver 1305 BIOS, 32GB Corsair dominator 2133 memory, 3960X CPU, GTX690 graphics, 512GB SSD and some 1TB HDD's. I originally ran 16GB of same memory - all was well until my C1 memory failed...the failure followed the memory board, so pretty sure it was memory itself. Decided to take the opportunity and expand to 32GB of Corsair 2133 Dominator DDR3 memory. This ended up being two 16GB kits, used, already mounted on a pair of waterblocks (individual memories check OK). Water cooling isn't necessary but I like to fiddle, so I went ahead.

Since these are two kits-same specs but not necessarily matched, I knew there might be mismatch issues, but I went ahead anyway.

As viewed left-to-right, one kit occupies A1, A2, B1, B2 and the other occupies D2, D1, C2, C1. This is due to there being two, four board assemblies, each totalling 16GB. My hope was this would create 32GB of working RAM.

I expected that I might get some issues such as having only the A1/B1/C1/D1 cards or only the A2/B2/C2/D2 cards work because of the 1 vs 2 channeling.

Instead, I got: A1, A2, C1, C2 showing "empty" (Belarc terminology) and B1, B2, D1, D2 showing 4GB each for a total of 16GB. This pattern where the two outer slots on each side of the CPU are "empty" seems meaninful.

To add to my confusion, my version 1305 BIOS registers the memory as follows: A1-empty (no screen at all), A2=4GB, B1=4GB, B2=4GB, C1=4GB, C2=4GB, D1=4GB, D2=4GB which would seem to total 28GB. However, it is quite clear by several methods(task manager and Belarc Advisor) that only 16GB total memory are actually online.

Did I mention I don't know what I'm doing here? I genuinely don't. I have read and read but I don't understand what is happening.

My BIOS needs updating to 4901...tried with EZ Flash 2 but it doesn't see the renamed BIOS file. I'll handle this via a separate post.

Thank you all very much in general, as I've found several answers to previous issues on this forum, and specific thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.

best to all
