Hey friends,

I have a reference 290x that ramps up the fan speed uncomfortably slowly. I don't like it sitting at 95c all the time, but if I set the fan speed manually it will oscillate up and down by about 400rpm and it is very irritating.

Is there any way to change the fan ramp so it's more aggressive?

Thank you.

Yes, install MSI Afterburner and you'll have a fan tab under settings where you can enable a custom fan curve.

Enable hysteresis, then it will not slow down until it has cooled by a unit amount of temperature. 5°C is the default.

fan may be bad/worn// tried replacing the fan?? is it AMD Reference Blower style, here is replacement for that here best price found! (390X should work as the 390X is just a re-branded R9 290X

or Try re-flashing the Bios of your Model of the Radeon R9 290X …

( BIOS FOR AMD REFERENCE PCB/BLOWER FAN .. 290 & 290X AMD only..

( BIOS FOR AMD Custom AIB CARDS customPCB / Mult- FAN .. 290 & 290X AMD or AIB..

*ATI/AMD Bios Flasher, (only do at your wn risk.... i wont be responsible (if your card'(s) have a dual bios (better for a failed flash / Wrong Bios rom)

TechPowerUp Radeon Bios Editor 9 works up to 7870 ghz edition cards unknown / untested on R9 series!!!

(I have to R9 290 4GB myself, one is water-blocked the other is not , though i do have a 2nd heatkiller water block (from Frozen-cpu.com and only paid like $9.99 for each R9 290/290X Water blocks a couple years ago ( i couldn't pass up the price as $9.99 per block was too good to pass up even though the r9 290s i have are cut down from the full Hawaii XT Die/Chips? :( but in todays hardware "CLIMATE" with Prices completely out of control im glad i did get them now as if the fans break/fail/or quit working/lock up.. i can still water-cool them with full-cover water-blocks and if you can find* the same block and if you can still get them for $10usd (I doubt it but u never know!) its definitely an option and a better one over fixing the air cooler fan if you can find dirt cheap R9 200 series Water-Bocks //?

Thanks I'll check it out!

I'll take a look at that. Thank you!

Thanks for all that. I think the fan is fine since it doesn't do anything funky when set on automatic, and can still rev up real high. I'll try flashing the Bios after I've tried the other options.
