Been reading that by removing or lapping the IHS of a cpu will lower temp. Some claims that it will lower as much as 3 to 4 C. While others say only 1 C. Will it lower temp that much and if it only lower for 1 C how do we know it lower at all since motherboard temp sensor are not very accurate. Anyway my question is by using a good after market cooler we know it will lower cpu temps and lapping the heatsink also helps and using better thermal paste helps. But will removing or lapping the IHS lower cpu temp if yes than how much? And if it is worth doing it?

yup it isnt worth doing it
you have to find a cooler that will perfectly set up on your cpu, because the die is smaller then the ihs and when you set the cooler up angular then u could probably broke a piece of your die off

But what would help you is, if you remove the IHS. That gives much lower temps, but you have to be careful.

but then you cant put a normal cooler on it without ish the only thing i heard is that some watercoolers stilll fit afterwards

Why wouldn't you be able to put a normal cooler on it?

Somewhere buried in the archives of Techpowerup forums, is a lengthy thread regarding removing the IHS off different chips. Everyone who tried it on an intel chip also removed the silicon (that's bad).

No one really had anything good to say about the experience of removing an IHS.

Lapping one is something I never really considered, but sounds safe as long as you have good technique and tools. And yes, good thermal past will always make a difference!
