ok ive tried to turn off my pagefile with no joy.

currently its at 4gb+ and is spread over parts of the drive and as such my defrag program says drive C: is 24% fragmented,i wanted to remove it completely ,then defrag the drive and the re-enable the pagefile.
but even when i set it to 0mb the pagefile itself is still there on the drive ,even after a reboot/shutdown.

is it poss to do what i want or am i stuck with a 24% fragmented C: drive ? :(

With 4GB RAM I just set my pagefile to 1024/1024...WIndows was designed to use the page file, I've removed it and had issues before...some programs will just give messages, some won't work, some will crash. What program are you using to defrag? You don't have an option that says "No Paging File"??? I am running vista x64 and when I do that, the PF is gone after reboot...just make sure to hit the Set button before hitting OK or it might not take.

ok, I really don't think removing the page file is a good idea
but to minimize the fragmentation you should specify that size of the file instead of allowing windows to choose size.
it all could be done in performance window (right click on my pc, properties, advanced tab, performance settings, advanced tab, virtual memory change)

that should prevent large fragmentation, at lest i heard so

after you have done so, try some soft with boot defrag. I recommend perfect dick 2008, i think thay should have a trial available

if u read my post ,im not after gettign rid of the pagefile permanantly ,just until i can defrag my c: drive ,then i will re-enable the pagefile.
just at the moment with it being spread all over the drive ,i cannot properly defrag the drive.

a111087, you might want to proof read that post LOL

Alright, again...but with more detail..

Got to Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Settings button under Performance > Advanced > Change Button under Virtual Memory > Next to the SET button is the choice for NO PAGING FILE. Click that tab so it's highlighted, click SET, click OK, restart.

Unless you've done that already, you didn't state, but hopefully it works! It has worked fine for me in the past..so it should work for you!

Then you should be able to defrag w/o worrying about the pagefile causing you grief, if that's the case and not your Defrag program's err. What program is are you using for defrag?

:toast:

i def set it using the set button, windows says its disabled and i have to restart ,but when i do restart my defrag prog is still showing the pagefile to be there.

im using a prog called ultimate defrag 2008

edit: just tried defraggler and that also shows me having a 4gb pagefile still on the drive.

:(

From a thread I just googled up, it says it can move your pagefile...maybe lookinto that so you can put it after all your OS and program stuff...
Ultimate Defrag does what you're after.

Tools - Options - Under "High Performance" select "Custom"

Select the files in the right pane. Move them over to the left pane, re-arrange them in the order of preference.

Use the "Consolidate" defrag mode and select "Respect High Performance" in the option for that mode.

Hope that helps.

Maybe try that instead? I've never used Ultimate defrag, I'm actually getting ready to load up JkDefrag, I heard it's one of the better free ones.

Why have such a huge pagefile? just make it 1gig :) 2 gig if you do some serious 3d or 2d pictures. But most programs should have a option for boot defrag, even tho it takes a long time to run, its the best way to defrag :) I vote for perfect disk, as it has a really good boottime defrag :)

Bam that's it i d that smetimes when i deFrag.

xubidoo, you could always try setting it to something smaller, say 512mb, restarting and seeing if it's shrunk or not.

If not, google a hack that makes Windows delete the pagefile upon shut down. It will extend shut down time significantly, but you can then disable the pagefile, activate the hack, restart and disable it.

seems i had to do wat Darknova suggested ,as nothign else would get rid of it ,i shrunk it to 16mb and that did help muchly ,enabling me to do a defrag :)

think i will create a 1024mb pagefile when its done ,is that large enough for Vista ?

1024 min/max mb PF has been fine for me with 4GB of RAM...I have my G/F's set up the same too, she's also on 4GB of RAM..both run, game, and do whatever we need just fine.

set pagefile to around 1GB or less
then it will use memory more

i get problems with Valve Source Engines games giving to little memory warning if you disable pagefile

I use ultimate defrag too, and problem was setting the PF to a fixed min and max so that it won't always grow, by the way if you guys are using 3rd party defraggers which has different settings, Vista HAS a scheduled defrag I forgot how often but it is always running if it's in the task scheduler... I think it runs consolidation type of defrag...
