Does anyone run the BOINC Manager on Linux?

If so, what is the experience?

I finally got it installed but am having a hard time getting it to connect to the client. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

The experience is like having difficulties most of the time. Especially if you are trying to use a gpu.
I tried several times in the past and as many times I quit and reverted back to windows
which just works and is much more productive in the end.

Sorry to say so, as I am a linux fan.

There are several places you can go if you need a cheap license for windows.

All of my machines have either a dual boot (Ubuntu/Win10) or two SSDs with Linux on one and Windows on the other. I had no problems with BOINC Manager on any of them, sure a restart with jobs saved on the drives takes 5-10 seconds to show the jobs but that’s it. Linux over Windows for speed and points any day.

I've tried to use boinc and f@h on ubuntu and never had any luck. Boinc had the same issue you had & f@h did work but I wasn't able to get it to fold on gpu's, only the cpu.
I gave up and used win 10 instead, not as efficient but it just works.

I had same prob with F@H on Mint installation. But, I don't think I had nvidia drivers loaded. Now, I know hiw to get them installed correctly, so thanks OP for giving me a bit of motivation to try it again.

Runs w/o too much of an issue- I run and have run many systems on Ubuntu

If trying to connect to WCG it's not you, the project is down and will hopefully be back up and running in a day or two

This might be a bit outdated, but most of it should be fairly similar.

If anyone has managed to get FAH working with Linux, I'd be interested to know! The last I remember, it was a pain with folding, but crunching was no issues at all as I used to run Linux Mint with some of my crunchers :)

I did 90% of my points under Ubuntu but it was with serious help from @agent00skid setting it up. I did make a try on my own but failed as far as I remember.

I've got it installed it simply won't connect to the client. I have verified the client is running.

My old system, converted to full time crunching ,was dual boot Windows and Linux. I wanted a full blown Linux box so I completely wiped Windows and installed Ubuntu (BackBox) thinking it would crunch more efficiently.

Did you install directly from the Ubuntu software repositories, or attempt to do in manually? From memory, using the repositories was a one click and done.

Through the terminal. I'll give the repository suggestion a go, thanks.

So, I used, $ sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove boinc-client

Then used these instructions to re-install. It is now running! \m/

I used the instructions to install BOINC on Debian 12 and they worked perfectly ONCE.

I was able to open the BOINC Manager and setup an existing project no issues.

Then (big mistake I guess) I rebooted the instance and now the Manager cannot connect to the boinc-client service.

I have confirmed that boinc-client is running and have tried to reinstall BOINC but that does not work.

I am running BOINC on a pair of Debian 11 machines and do not recall this amount of trouble.

I added my userid into the sudoer file so I don't lack permissions.

This was done via a Terminal Window in the gui.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? I am not a Linux export and this appears to be out of my league for troubleshooting.

Any help is appreciated!
