Rust not utilising my CPU, GPU and RAM to the best potential and having low fps.

While playing rust for some reason my pc refuses to use more CPU, GPU and RAM therefore basically having very low fps when playing.
I have an i7-4790, 20gb of ram and a MSI 3060 dual fan.

This problem is the same on all servers.

The CPU is most likely a bottleneck

Agreed.

45% usage means that it's using 4 threads as much as possible, but those 4 threads aren't strong enough to feed the GPU. A system upgrade is due, I'm afraid.

You can increase the graphical quality and the game won't run worse, just utilise the GPU more.

I'll suspect the RAM combo; 2x8GB (matched) + 1x4GB randomly added. Its also probably dual vs single rank........ and this game is a turd, too.

Easy solution: remove the single 4GB stick leaving 2x8GB in matched configuration.

More advanced: buy 2x16GB DDR3 used and replace all the ram.

Stop making this complicated lol

Since you have 20GB of RAM, i may suppose that the sticks are different (8+8+4GB my guess), and therefore your RAM isn't tuned at all/running at the lowest speed with the worst timings. Haswell is sensitive to RAM speed afaik, and I do remember going from a similarly mixed ram to a 2400MHz (XMP) 32GB kit that gave me a nice performance uplift (not by quantity, but a speed and timings). Since it's a locked chip (almost identical performance as my e3 1241v3 Xeon), there's nothing much to do about it. As someone already suggested, remove the 4GB stick, and try to tune the rest (if the 8+8 are matching). That GPU would do much better with a newer CPU, and I know that also from experience (5700XT is similar to 3060).

@XL-R8R i feel it took me an age to write that...

And yes, the game is a turd, UE4 sandbox game, I've played ARK... Even the highest-end rigs didn't mean good framerates/smooth gameplay.

What CPU and motherboard combo would you recommend for a cheap 6-core that doesn't get bottlenecked by my RTX 3060?

I'd say get a i5 12600K with a DDR4/DDR5 motherboard.

(too bad you got unusable DDR3...)

For a bargain, Ryzen 5 3600 and almost any board with some DDR4. Or get some better games, j/k.

Hey, am having the same problem, I dont really know why the cpu cant use more of its power, I have a RTX 3060, R7 5700G, 16GB at 3200mhz, and a Asus prime 520M A-II. Can some one give me an idea or tell me what can I do to solve the problem?

It appears you're playing a not highly multi-threaded game - it only uses a few of your CPU cores that aren't strong enough to keep your 3060 fed. You'll see this problem disappear with a stronger CPU, a higher monitor resolution and/or graphics settings, or in a game that uses more of your GPU and/or CPU cores.

I see, my graphics are at max settings, i was thinking to change the motherboard and adding extra 16gb of ram, would that make an improvement in performance?

When your cpu bottlenecked you need more IPC. Ram would not address that need.

max settings at 2k with DLSS quality mode will get you about 60fps

Thats based on my custom server while playing the game on the same pc
you can check my system specs <

Make sure the game is on an SSD or NVME drive to or it will load slow and run like crap.

How i can increase ipc, am really new in this computer world
IPC is instructions per cycle or clock, etc. It's a measurement of how much work is done per clock cycle single threaded. For poorly threaded games IPC is the most crucial metric. How to get more of it? That's not easy to do and main way to improve it is to overclock your cpu. You can improve things 5% to 10% ish if you're lucky. However in the grand scheme of things its still not much and then overclocking can be complex for a beginner and it will increase loads on your cooling. Then there's the buying a newer faster cpu, etc. In any case it's not easy to improve IPC and it's range is generally baked into the cpu.

Also, fill out your specs we know where you're comping from system specs wise.

Ty rn am with dlss at balanced and max grafics with around 80 fps and. 1080p

Should i change the mobo or just go ahead With a new processor? Or do you see any good
Upgrade in my system, I already filled out the information in my profile

The best CPU you could get for your system is the 5800X3D, assuming that your main goal is gaming. It would be more than enough for your 3060, and could potentially last a couple more GPU generations.

Yea, the 5800X3D is the one chip to have for gaming on that socket. Don't know about that MB though?

Good point. The X3D doesn't eat a lot, so it should be okay, I guess. Don't quote me on it, though - that VRM looks quite anaemic.

I have de same problem with a R7 5700X + RX 5700 8GB + 32GB DDRR 3600Mhz.

I was so confusing because my older computer with a i5 8400 + rx 580 was running better than my actual computer.

So, i tried a lot of graphics settings and a even more configurations on amd drivers panel.

On my last try, i disabled the RESIZABLE BARBAR on adm drivers panel, restarted the computer and when i opened rust again, my GPU was in 100% and de frames are around 100 with almost in ultra.

Disabling the RESIZABLE BARBAR fixed taht gpu usage problem for me.

Sorry for the bad english.
