Well I've got a spare 8600gt, I know it ain't a fps slayer but I want to keep it (some bit of nostalgia here, it was a gift) So here is the problem, I found, while cleaning it up, a bit of rust (see the pic) I tested it and it worked alright, but I might want to stop the rust from eating the card. So? anyone had such experience and got ideas to stop it? :toast:

It's not on the GPU. Clean it up with alcohol would be your best bet, though that doesn't look good. If I had that card I would put it through some abuse before that part blew up. It looks more like burn markings than rust.

Yeah its rather on the board! Nopes it's rust, I guess it came from the heatsink mouting clip (cause there's rust under it too, maybe it just spreaded) I'm gonna try the alcohol and see what happens. Is there any solution that can stop it from spreading? Cause alcohol is just gonna clean it, I guess.

I dont know how safe it would be (a lot of it is determined by your skill), but you could hit that with some super fine 1500/2000 sandpaper and get the rust off.

You could try dabbing some CLR on it. It's a Calcium, lime and rust remover.

Then dab a little oil on it with a q-tip.

Was it in storage? It's unusual to see rust on PC parts that are in use and not subject to a watercooling failure :)

I was thinking what he could put on it to 'seal' it, had a brain freeze

I would consider that a candidate for RMA.

If it's an old, old gift, then it's likely that it won't be RMA'able anymore.

Yes it has been stored for a year maybe, with occasional use.

Rma is alas out of question, its 3 years old! I'll look into it guys, thank you very much. :toast: I'm gonna try sanding some stuff before, to get some "training" before I attack the card!
