RX 560 randomly powering off system.

Couldn't get much help elsewhere so here's hoping things work out here.

I recently found this GPU in storage, It was a dry location and I wanted to test if it would work or not.
Booting up, everything ran fine until the drivers (WQHL) were installed and it randomly shuts the system off.
All components in my PC are confirmed functioning as intended and work fine with other cards.
The GPU seems to crash even when there is no thermal load present.

I've tried just about all I could potentially do to get this GPU to work with no luck.
  • BIOS Flashing had no avail.
  • Inspected the board with no components having any sort of damage or deterioration. (Best not to take my word for this, I am no expert.)
  • Lowering clocks has no effect on whether it will crash or not.
  • Tested in two different PC's with absolutely no difference in events.
  • Crashes at complete random, whether or not there is load present.
  • Using different video outputs makes no difference.
Genuinely at a loss as to what's wrong with this thing.

Perhaps it has some cold solder joints under the GPU; you could try the heatgun treatment but otherwise I'd say it's faulty. Don't mess with it any more it's not worth it.

That could probably be the issue, Most of the solder joints on my board don't look particularly broken but they do look odd.

does it hang the system and then eventually it shuts down OR it causes something like a short and the system shuts down immediately? If its the second case, it could be the vrm of the card behaving abnormally. And if its the first case, does it give you any bsod? Try 18.x.x drivers, lets say this one https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-18-12-1-1 and also underclock the card to lets say 1100 or even 1000mhz core and 1500 memory. (make it permanent in wattman so it will load it upon boot).

It's more of a hang, the screen output vanishes and the audio starts buzzing and then my mouse loses power and eventually the entire system attempts to reboot.
Other times, though, The screen sometimes starts having a strobe fever session and the screen will flash from black to a random color (Pink, Orange, Yellow. Note that it only flashes a single color, not a different one everytime, not dure if this means anything though.)

Funny timing as I had VERY similar if not exact same issue recently with my own RX 560. Ended up swapping the card.
Did they ever tell you what was wrong with it?

Nope. It was out of warranty actually. So swapping meant just buying a new one sadly.

I have a hunch that oven method might help temporarily but I'm too lazy to play with that.
To be honest my one was likely giving warning signs months before, randomly shutting down after an hour or so of gaming.

So I guess my only option at this point is attempting to reflow the board.
I guess I'll look for some heat tape and flux.

I recall a case where I got a video card, and it would have problems; turned out it was pushing my power supply too hard. In my case it was just a bad capacitor in the supply.

Booting up, everything ran fine until the drivers (WQHL) were installed and it randomly shuts the system off.

That would kick in its full abilities and with-it power demands; what power supply are you using?

Try underclocking the card with wattman. Also, i dont think its your psu, because the RX 560 are very frugal and dont pull more than 110W (card alone) under full stress. If you are experience the issue even while surfing the web (for which the 560 barely requires 50W), then you can exclude the psu from the suspect list unless you got a really bad noname unit (please provide the model if you can), i mean even if the power is enough (50W can be provided by literally any psu), garbage power supplies can have really bad ripple.

The two PC's I used to test it had:
System 1: Dell Workstation 675W (80+ Silver)
This PSU works fine with my GTX 660.
System 2: Thermaltake Smart 600W (80+)
This one also is equipped with a 660.
Both GPU's had a maximum power draw of 120W.
The RX 560 can only draw up to 120W so it's unlikely that the power supplies would be the issue.

It was worth a shot...

Get a Hwinfo64 screenshot. And what specs are the 2 systems? Model numbers please.

A 660 is before 2013 iirc.

Here's the specifications of System 1.

General system

Try formatting windows and right away DDU the stock Radeon driver that comes with the os.
Block hardware updates on advanced system settings.
Install Radeon 19.x.x drivers. Avoid getting 20.x.x+
