Scan image and convert to word document

Do you know any way or any program to make the conversion from a scanned image to .doc?
What is the best free way?

Does OpenOffice.org do this? They've been around for years and support has been pretty good.

You need an OCR program. Also, if you have a smartphone, DocScanner Pro will scan and convert to PDF, if I understand the program correectly.
