my friend has a hp compaq nc6200. i need to clarify what kind of ram he needs.

256-MB DDR2 synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) at 400 and 533 MHz, expandable to 2.0 GB

thats what was posted on the site. so is it ddr2 4200? or.... something haha i have no clue :wtf:

thanks for the response ladies and gents. oh HAPPY HOLLIDAYS!

You are probobly right because this isn't a new laptop.

definitely its a really old one. i had it reformatted and back up all the files. 3 folders took up almost 25 gigs and his laptop hdd only has 40. thank you hardware punisher. i thought so also

I would get DDR2-533 which is PC2-4200 (sometimes labeled PC2-4300). Make sure they are SO-DIMM. I would also recommend Kingston as the manufacturer because their memory is compatible with pretty much everything.

512 MiB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144182
1 GiB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144183

I wouldn't bother with 256 MiB, it costs more than 1 GiB. XD

haha. yeah i'm buying some local pc2700 sticks of 512mb tmrw and pc2 4200 for a really decent price. gotta love craigslist. from CALI!

FYI, PC2700 is DDR-333.

There is also no problem with putting faster memory than the motherboard supports. It will just run the memory underclocked (e.g. DDR-400 would work fine in a DDR-333 board and DDR2-800 would work fine in a DDR2-533 board).

yeah. oh i'm mentioning for my friends desktop not laptop anymore since we clarified it :D
