Should I upgrade GPU or CPU or is there something else wrong?

My current setup is

CPU: Intel i7 3930K - 6 Cores, 12 Threads @ 3.2GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX1060 6GB

My issue is I am trying to record gaming footage and I'm getting lag on OBS as I'm recording. The game runs fine while I'm playing but it seems there's an issue as OBS seems like it cant keep up. It will drop down to 30ish or less FPS on recording.

My thoughts were that I can either upgrade my GPU or CPU or both if needed but I know that I may have to upgrade my MOBO and RAM which starts to become too pricey for me. My other option is to get a capture card and send my footage to my laptop to decrease the load on my desktop.

I would like to settle on a capture card and upgrade GPU to a GTX 1080, but I have never had to do a setup like this and I'm worried about not setting it up correctly.

Any suggestions is welcome.

Is the 3930K overclocked? Cuz it's a bit old now offering similar perf to something like a 2600. Also the 1060 can use Shadowplay, this use the GPU's display engine to encode on the fly, have you given that a go? I don't think a 1080 would make any difference. What is CPU load like during the recording?

Overclock the 3930K first. Recording and playing games is probably making it run at it's base clock instead of boosting, and 3.2GHz probably isn't fast enough to record with OBS in real time. Especially not if you are recording at 1080p or higher.

Nothing wrong with your CPU or GPU you should change your settings in OBS.....
Go to settings/Output/Recording/
Then set things like this on pic bellow:

then make sure that on video settings you have desired resolution and filter settings

Attention because you have a Nvidia card use Nvidia encoder(better option)or standard x264(can caused the lagging problems on recorded video if is not tweaked well).....
This settings should be more then good to record video in 1080p/30/60Fps if you want better&smoother quality change your bitrate on higher numbers(20K-40k)
