because it's DDR (double data rate)

so like with my card, it lists 1800MHz for the mem, but it's really 900MHz

as for the SLi, I can't help ya :/

I don't think so, although I'm no expert on SLI. I think you need two matched cards, albeit from different brands is fine, but one DDR2 and one DDR3 probably won't work.

it's probably a better idea to save up for that 8800, and for now just OC your 8600

actually im fairly sure as long as the gpu is the same they will work just fine, however the computer may slow down either card to match the clock speeds, which would mean GDDR3 at DDR2 speeds, ouch.

"Cards from two separate retail companies will work together in SLI mode, but they must be the same GPU model (e.g. G70, G73, G80, etc). The cards may have different BIOS revisions, different default clock speeds, or even different memory sizes. However, the fastest card – or the card with more memory - will run at the speed of the slower card or disable its additional memory."

Completely different memory architectures though? IMO, I would send nVidia an e-mail and ask them. It's not exactly clear.

yeah email them to be sure but i reckon itll work. in any case ohtwoone says he has the ddr3 version, so then my question is why would you by a ddr2 version? just get another ddr3 (actually gddr3), as the 512 ddr2 models usually cost about the same.

A DDR2 card should work with a DDR3 card. The cards are close enough for SLI to work, the only thing that it really cares about is the GPU being the same. It will just lower the DDR3 card's speeds to match the DDR2 card.

hmm, its not worth getting a gddr3 version they are about $100 mor expensive, this is only short term untill i get a 8800, and if its guna slow down the gddr3 to ddr2 speeds then its pointless really.

thats odd, here in aus all the 8600's are 140-160 dollars, and some of the more expensive ones are the 512 ddr2 models, weird...
