I feel happy for you dude. That you solved the situation. Had similar experience with a new GPU aftermarket cooler. After installing it, I run Heaven's benchmark, but the card kept shutting down. After a few attempts I was down for the fight and really pissed. Then it occurred to me after I calmed down to check the cooler again. After looking with a bright flash light it turn out that one of the rubber washers was too high (just a millimeter or so) and lifting one of the four corners of the cooler. I removed all washers, the cooler laid flat down on the chip and the GPU breezed to it's gaming heights. I was glad the problem sorted out I can relate to your case.
