Hey guys,

I just did a clean format/reinstall of Windows XP, and now my Sound Card won't work properly. The Windows log-on/off sounds play properly, but everything else is really quiet, and theres a buzzing on my speakers too. Any ideas why? It's annoying that I can't listen to my music.

Youre not having much luck today mr clarke :), hmm buzzing i sorted mine with a driver update when i had my audigy 2 plugged in but i dont use it anymore, but first off are you sure that ur mobo's using the card and not on board cos sometimes you need to tell ur pc to use it i have had to do it many a time ? and have you tried up dated drivers also check all ins and outs for loose connections ? allways start with the simple stuff.

It's using the card, and I'm using drivers from Windows Update (which worked fine before, the ones from Creative's site say "Supported Product not found")

... I'm using drivers from Windows Update ... the ones from Creative's site say "Supported Product not found")

I would consider that as part of the problem, or perhaps THE problem.

Thing is, the exact same drivers from Windows Update worked fine 2 days ago.

That's the driver I tried, it wouldnt install.

I wonder how well Crysis will run in Linux? I know STALKER runs :p...

At least theres no driver issues in Ubuntu.

OK, it's either my sound card, or my speakers, because I'm using Ubuntu 8.04LTS now, and the problem persists.

try your headphones out, if they still do it then its your card. Man, ben you really do have the worse luck sometimes!

If you have headphones see if it's there as buzzing \ low sound can be coursed by a short in the wires. All so if the plug in correctly as well \and in the correct socket..

Yeah, it buzzes through the headphones too.

try uninstalling sound card completely, reseat it the lot.

It's the speakers, I'm using onboard sound now and it has the same problem. So... i need cheap speakers that have a headphone socket, good sound quality, will connect to my soundcard and is from www.ebuyer.com. Any recommendations?

These look by far the best cheap ones there, but no headphone socket:banghead:, BUT you could probably find a splitter cable really cheap (£1-3) somewhere like maplin

I have the logi x230 but these are the newer ones and at only £10 more than the ones you posted http://www.ebuyer.com/product/126176.

Sound qualitys good and for the price you can't go wrong.

i have the logitech x230 they are really nice. good bass on the sub as well.

Just out of curiosity... what happens if you plug your headphones directly into the soundcard.

Dunno, I can't reach that far.

maybe you should try it out. its strange for some speakers to just suddenly not work right.

Dunno, I can't reach that far.

You can't pin the problem on the speakers until you plug something else directly into the soundcard to verify good or bad audio.

I just hate to see you spend money on something that doesn't fix the problem when you could have ruled out the possibility with proper troubleshooting.

Headphones are fine when directly plugged in.

then the problem is most likely with the speakers.
