So, im using an Xonar D2 with Vista Ulimate fine for a couple of days with my new computer. I dont have any issues with my 5.1 sound system(Logitech Z-5500) and everything is going great. Then one day i decide to install and play Rome:Total war for some nostalgia and while it was installing i was playing some music(megadeth) in the background... well once it finish i opened up RTW went into Audio/Graphics and changed everything how i wanted it. Now when i got to the sound as my XONAR D2 is able to do EAX 2 within Vista i enable it with no problems however when i do so i noticed i no longer get sound out of my Right Front speaker. Well screwing around for hours on end trying to get it to work, i uninstall and reinstall XONAR drivers and no avail, At one point i did get sound out of all five when restarting my computer however changing the Audio Output(2/4/6/8 channels) would mess it up again. Fustrated i decided to install an Sound Blaster Augidy SE thinking it had to be the XONAR, well it wasnt because i still didnt get sound out of my right front speaker, when the SE was install and put to 5.1. Now its even worse! the speakers change everytime at random, meaning when i i click "test" sometimes ill hear the Right front come out of the center! or the Left Front being the Right rear! then when i do the test again this time the Right front works correctly and the Right Rear but i get the Center out of the left front!

What the hell happened! I've tried about everything i can think of and my last resort is to install Vista again(this time without RTW!) i personally believe something got screwed up in vista but if so, how do i fix it? i mean i have no idea what the hell it could be.

Any help, because im on my last straw and my HDD is going to be wiped.  :( :shadedshu

EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED IM RETARDED THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

i must of messed up the wiring to the sound card, the Right Front and the Subwoofer were switched and i put them back now i get my sound again.

i found vista to be extreamly picky when it comes to that i have the Logitech z 540 5.1 system and i had a older sound blaster card and it did not like it ... any way go in to the control panel and click sound then click in the sound card and at the bottom of the screen click configure and see if thats set to 5.1

But it doesnt help because they worked fine before i had 5.1 and everything with the Z-5500 and Xonar but something happened and how do i fix it?

take out the sound card!
DL and install regmechanic.
run it, reboot.

DONT try to install the drivers... let vista search online for them.
if vista cant find the driver... tell it to search the C:/ drive. it SHOULD find it.
if not, reinstall the driver FROM THE CD! it has the COMPLETE INSTALL PACKAGE unlike the one you DL from the internet. you can do the update after you get it working right.

1) Vista doesnt seem to get anysound at all when i let it "search for drivers" so i asssume even though it successfully installed it still needs the Websites Drivers

2) Running the Reg now

3) popped in the Augidy SE again and same problem still no Right Front.

Two different sound cards = the speaker is broken

Nope, thought that too but the speaker works, i used a another speaker but the problem persisted.

Also
"At one point i did get sound out of all five when restarting my computer however changing the Audio Output(2/4/6/8 channels) would mess it up again."

there was a few points were i did get sound out of all five.

What about
Checking the jacks
Switching the jacks
Changing the jacks` output thru the sound card software (if allowed) ?

Yeap, i fooled around with that to believe me im been at this for days trying everything i know of.

As of now im dead sure something when screwy with Vista because the speakers are brand new(week old) its not the Card because both the XONAR and Augidy share the same problem

the Regmechanic is still going man it takes forever!

Go to system restore it will bring up restore points have a look to see what has been installed on your PC if you know what date the problem started.

Also has your Mobo on board sound? if yes check to see its disabled.

1) Well that Regmech ran for 3 hours, found 5323 problems and refused to fix any of them unless i bought a license or use a trial, so i click trial and guess what now i have to let it rescan it all over again. Waste of time.

2) System restore, did it and nothing still Zero sound out of my right Front speaker.

Is the driver that you were using a true vista driver? Also have you tried to pull the sound card, uninstall, drivers, then try to use the onboard audio and see if the problem persists?

5323 !!! LOL :roll::roll::roll:

Well you found A problem !!

Yea with Reg mech :/ i had this computer for less then a week

Problem still exists...

Things i have tried THAT HAVE NOT WORKED....

-Registry Scan and Fix
-System Restore point(actually failed to restore, i set the restore point to before i installed RTW)
-Switching Speakers and changing the Front right with another
-Uninstall and reinstall of Sound Drivers for both Audigy and XONAR
-Switching sound cards from XONAR to Audigy, problem persists

Please i really need some help! I've been using my Logitech USB Headset for the pass week and i'd really like to have my 5.1 sound i spent so much money on(XONAR D2+Z-5500 speakers-$400) to work like it was before! my last resort as i state is to do a complete wipe of Vista which if i can avoid i really want to!
