So I posted this in the general threads not knowing that there was a storage thread
Ummm, yes. So I've been looking into SSDs. For those that have them... do you think they are worth it?

I was thinking about either getting a 40GB Intel X-25V or a 64GB Kingston SSDNow V. 80GB Intel is in consideration.

The only thing that's keeping me away is that .... well it's REALLY pricey. So would $120 for a 40 gigger or 64 GB for $150... do you think its well worth the performance boost for the price? It won't boost my FPS. All it'll do is load stuff faster... well stuff that's on the SSD anyway.
I don't want to spend too much- I just want to just try it out really and see what the future holds :D

The extra $30 (25% more) gets you about 24GB (60% more) space. Not to mention faster speeds because of more channels. $150 for 64GB of space is worth it.

Love the SSD. Prices are droping also. :nutkick:

ZZF 80Gigs on sale for 204 after rebate.

Local store had a crazy weekend deal, 160GB Intel SSD and Win7 Ultimate 64 for $409. I bought two of them. Couple get an 80Gb drive and Win7 Pro for $299.

SSDs in general are fast, but I am starting to hate them. Maybe it's bad luck? I can't count the number of HDs I've had in my life including ones I've picked out and installed for various friends/family and clients. In all this time I've had only 1 hd fail (I managed to never own or otherwise suggest a deathstar back in the day) to the point that data wasn't retrievable and 2 others that were throwing smart errors, though data at that point was retrieved and the drives sent in under warranty.

That brings me to this, so far since I've adopted SSDs between myself/family/friends and clients I have seen a number of failures, data has not been retrievable in any of the cases. And even more drives with file corruption issues. Actually on Saturday I had another SSD fail, this time an OCZ Solid 2. I'm starting to wish I would have just went with a couple of the newer velociraptors. I've since stopped suggesting SSDs to anyone that asks. Seems to me the technology (at least in my experience so far) is still in the "early adopters" phase. And the issues I've personally witnesses doesn't seem to be set to a particular brand or controller, though I've seen more issues with the barefoot based drives then any others (don't think I've had the displeasure of playing with a jmicron based SSD yet)....

Im with flak here, i've owned 3 ssd's and each time, I could never get them done correctly raid or not raid it wouldn't work.

Only had one brand of hard drive fail. mechanical drives are cheap, and they are massive storage.

Compared to the mechanical to ssd, I cannot justify it.

Yeah I'm still not sure if I want one or not I just want to play with one just to see what the crystal ball is showing, so if I did get one realistically I would get a 40 gig intel. That being said after it's formatted and has 37GB left, well I can't really do much with it you know?

But thanks for your opinion on the reliability of these drives :toast: I think I'll hold off until 160GB can be had for $50.
