Hi guys, can someone help me, basically when I launch steam it can open instantly then close and open instantly again, after a shutdown or restart it can then take 45 seconds to open then exit and take 45 seconds again, it’s a 50/50 chance when I boot my pc to weather all my steam launches are going to take 45 seconds or instantly and it’s locked in like that for the duration of the pc uptime untill I restart
Any ideas what can cause this, I’m on a fairly fresh windows 11 install

Also iv had to do sfc scannow a few times and it’s repaired files

Could be ram oc ? ( passed 24 hour annta extream with and without gpu load, 8 hour y crunch and 24 hour karhu)

There is a pretty wide range of troubleshooting you could undertake. You could start by filling in your system specs in profile.

Checking hard drive(s) for signs of errors, detuning RAM to stock speeds, use one of the many programs that fully erase Steam app and registry entries followed by something like CleanMgr +, BIOS flshbk button if your mobo has one, clean your case spotlessly including removing RAM and GPU in order to inspect slots they are inserted into,

Specs are in post
Jdec and same problem
Ecores off same problem
Gpu and ram out and inspected same problem
All services disabled apart from steam same problem
Jdec and full system defaults same problem
Steam full uninstall and cleared out with Revo same problem
Steam installed on different drives same problem

I have windows in a Samsung drive so can try installing Samsung magician ?

The repairs needed are probably beyond your typical minor file corruption repairs.... could be some deeper core file corruption of the OS or elements linked to your windows user account

Maybe uninstall steam and make a new windows user account. Install steam in the new account and see how you get on.

Once rebooted check task manager to see if anything is running unusually high. Load steam and check again if anything else is interfering.

In all the years i've been using steam ive never encountered hardware related issues but somehow random software snags have a way of sneaking in expectedly. Maybe steam/OS/other updates not playing nice or steam just blowing steam. The only other method to determine whether it is a hardware related issue is to opt for a fresh Windows install.

Let's assume the hardware is stable, and just focus on software first.

"chkdsk /f" for your system drive. does the scan complete? what does the log show?

"sfc /scannow" You've said you have done sfc, and that it has found errors. Are these errors reoccurring or does it fix them. What does the log say?

"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" won't hurt to do, especially if you do have something screwy in windows. What does the log say?

Does the event viewer show any errors related to steam? Does the event viewer show any major errors or warnings?

Does the same issue occur with a clean boot?

Plenty free space? Good temps? Clean caches? Good power? A quick HWiNFO will be useful.

Climb the diagnostic ladder one step at a time. You'll always be glad you did.

Ok thank you, do you think doing the windows reinstall feature would help ? Or reinstalling from media ?

If you routinely have SFC fixing corrupted files, there is a integrity problem on your system somewhere, on something thats working properly, SFC should be clean every time you run it.

Whether thats related to the slow start of Steam though no idea, but I would be more concerned about SFC finding things to fix than the steam loading speed.

What would cause that to happen how do I trouble shoot that ?

If you are using Samsung SSD, it would be good to install Samsung Magician. It will report if your drive has any issue, worth a try.

Could be one of a few things. You might have something that replaced system files.
It could be hardware related causing corruption like memory errors, bad ssd or unstable o/c.

Possibly. A clean install using external media and formatting the entire drive before installation is what i'd opt for.

Before going down that route... just make a new user account on your existing system. Uninstall steam from your primary account and run REVO. Then install steam again in the new user account. If the problem persists then i'd look to a fresh install.

Windows is likely borked. At some point a fresh install is faster and more efficient if nothing else reveals itself. OS drive controller removing large tracts of memory to inaccessible would be revealing even if simplified % remaining was unimpacted.

In any case, I would suggest mirroring a stable copy of OS to easily inserted external drive. Makes for a fast check against hardware issues and rebuild to known good state. :)

Right so iv fixed it, msi lite mode was the culprit, setting back to defaults in bios did not revert that back to its default

So it was low voltage

Enough to pass 8 hour y crunch and 24 hour occt but eh oh

Edit/ update 30 clear restarts, one shut down and it did it again but then restarted and cold started ok a few more times after so looks like a touch more will fix it
