I was just on the Steam support forum and I was reading that if your account is highjacked and used to cheat there is absolutely no way to get your games unbanned. You can play the single player but all online multiplayer games will be banned via VAC. Even if your account is restored your games will still be banned.

Stolen or not VAC can not be reset. I wonder how many people this happens too. I understand an IP being banned but an entire account even with proof it was stolen? I agree with a no tolerance stance for cheaters but to have zero tolerance for legit paying customers seems hardly fair.

So I ask any security gurus out there or even ex-hackers what is the best way to secure your Steam account. Other than not entering or giving out my password what should we look out for?

A VAC ban can be over-turned but it's very rare that it does happen. It's even in the TOS/Eula that it's entirely at Valve's discretion and they are under no obligation to do so.

However a lot of servers use a global ban-list that is separate to VAC which might be harder to overturn.

As to security, the only thing I can think of is to make sure your security question is totally illegible. Mine is a string of characters that mean nothing to me or anyone (I don't even know what it is).

Of course, make sure your password is as hard to get as possible, other than that I'm not sure if there are any other ways to secure it.

Check for key-loggers, viruses etc. every so often, you know, the usual stuff.

1. Use a complex password, numbers, lowercase, uppercase, 10 characters or more.

2. Use different password for all online services (If you use the same password for forums, Steam, games accts etc, you have just multiplied the chances of someone snagging your password.

3. Change all passwords regularly (at least monthly)

4. Run malware/virus scans daily/weekly

5. Use a router between your PC and the internet.

6. Use an application like Keepass to manage your passwords (Best to keep it on a thumbdrive)

hmmm... that would suck if that happened. Time for me to change my steam password when I get home ... haven't change it since I setup my account :o
