Hi my friend gave me his RX580 8GB GPU to attempt to troubleshoot.
Tested it in my mobo & his, there is no output, it’s no signal on the monitor and im 100% sure it’s not the monitor or cable as it works for the iGPU
GPU-Z shows clock & memory at 0 and bandwidth is unknown, among other figures either being unknown or N/A
I have updated my mobo’s BIOS, and reset it to default.
i have also flashed the GPUs BIOS and put in the stock bios.
I have updated to the latest drivers. I’ve reseated multiple times & switched between the two PCIe lanes on my Mobo.
I’ve looked into most forums and tried doing everything to no avail.
I suspect there’s a part of the GPU that might require a repair, but the only person I’ve found who can do that, doesn’t want to share possible problems without my paying him.

Specs on my pc are:

CPU: i7-8700
Cooler: RaijinTek 240mm AIO
RAM: 32GB 2400MHz
GPU: ASUS Strix RX580 8GB OC
PSU: CM 650W
MOBO: Gigabyte Z370 HD3P
Case: Antec DA601
Storage: 256GB sata Samsung Evo870
Seagate 1TB HDD
Seagate 2TB HDD
Seagate 500GB HDD

the fans also don’t spin but I suspect that’s a fan stop as the GPU isn’t doing any form of work at all.

I also tried downloading the drivers from the AMD website and I got an error saying that it failed to load the display drivers.

I believe at this point that the GPU is bust. Would there be any way of fixing it?

Plug your main card into the top slot and the 580 into the second slot. Boot into widows and check if you can see the card in device manager. Maybe your friend borked the card messing with the bios but if that doesn't work then it's most likely toast

Hi thanks for replying!
The card appears in device manager, I am currently using my integrated GPU, but with error 43

Give us a picture of the white sticker on the card. There's usually a part number or some numbers there that will help us identify the card

Pictures of the card itself will also help

I’ll upload the GPU-Z snip in a few

Either one of these should work. But the first link should be your card.

I havent been an ATi/AMD card user since 6970s existed so im not super caught up on details when it comes to flashing but this guide should help.

@eidairaman1 should be able to go more in depth if you need more help since this is pretty much his calling from God on these forums. -- Do remember to back up the original bios even if it doesnt work anyway.

It looks to be a pretty good 580 :toast: :toast:

this the BIOS you need... check the device ID and subsystem ID they are match

Ah thank you! will give it a go

Cool I have an update. I updated the vBIOS and suddenly my iGPU didn't wanna display anything after restarting, but the GPU was outputting a signal, a black screen, but a signal nonetheless. I then restarted the pc again, entered BIOS and changed my main display to the PCIe. It finally displayed the gigabyte boot logo, only to display some vertical lines looking like tears a few seconds after, I couldn't take a picture as it was quick but then it went into a black screen. I have now switched over to my iGPU again which is working now and the RX is no longer appearing on my display adapters, but I'm going to restart the pc now to double check

UPDATE:

It is detecting again but its back to no signal

Did you try the bios provided by @viper01 ?

-- also these lines. Were they white or all sorts of colours? Because if the bios doesnt fix then it could mean that the card is toast. I worked on a R9 270 or 280 that had the same problem. I could see it in device manager but the system would have some fuzzy lines occasionally or crash after loading into desktop or when installing new drivers.

Im closer to thinking that there is a hardware issue on the card and its toast.

I got a picture of it again it’s directly after the gigabyte logo.
I’ve also opened it up, I saw no warranty sticker so assumed he’d already done that and I see:

1. a lot of thermal paste, even around the main GPU

2. there’s a brown hard substance around some components, I’ve attached a photo below

And yes I tried your BIOS and it said there’s a mismatch, but @viper01 BIOS worked perfectly

Yeah i think your card is toast.

With blue lines like that - you could try a different port on the card (try DVI or DP if youre using HDMi etc etc) but I really think that the cards gone...

I dont even know what the hard stuff is but its either some sort of glue/epoxy or old thermal paste. If you poke it with a pencil and its super hard then it would be epoxy -- Somebody has tried to repair the card previously and done a messy job.

Depending on where your friend got the card from it might have already been repaired once then flipped it on ebay.

It looks like somebody tried to repair the power delivery system. a good electrician will probably be able to sort that out but it depends if youre willing to pay the repair fee that he demands.

what the hell did they do, you can see that stuff under the thermal pad too.

I honestly don’t know. I wanted to try DIY it then I saw that and immediately just chose to steer clear because I don’t know what’s going on there

Let me catch up

Error results from thr bios with Autodetect on the memory on gpu-z.

I can attempt to provided a good bios but you may need to find Eli Tech or Zettabit.lab or Actually Hardcore Overclocking email address for a board repair or Reach out to Asus and pay for a repair.

Thank you! Will ASUS even take in a board that looks like that? It’s been heavily tampered with and that epoxy like substance just seems to make it worse. I’ll reach out to them though

Yeah, you will just pay for the repair

Go on a search engine or youtube try to locate the email addresses for the others

I will research bios

Update: after a lot of tinkering and changing things around in my pc. I finally reinstalled windows and dug deeper into my BIOS, now we have a display, with permanent vertical lines & the GPU is stuck on MS basic adapter, but I’m no longer getting a black/blank screen.

unfortunately I’m in South Africa and I don’t think ASUS has a service centre and the ones listed on their site only service laptops and notebooks. I’ve contacted other people who claim they can fix it, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk.

I’ve been told that the card needs a reflow, with liquid flux and a heat gun? Any advice on that?

I'm not saying this will fix this vertical lines, but if you don't use the atikmdag-patcher.exe, Windows will load with a basic ms driver installed for the card.

After you flash the bios when it asks you to reboot, click 'no' and run the atikmdag-patcher.exe , then reboot after it's done patching.

Will give that a shot! Thank you
What memory brand & model is physically on that card? I would highly suggest cleaning the pcie blade pins on the card with electronic contact cleaner/isopropyl alcohol/hydrogen peroxide and cotton swabs, blow out the pcie slot on motherboard with an air duster. then ensure the card is in the slot firm and squared without putting tension on the slot up or down with the case standing up.

That's any card if it's newer than the OS release date.

I don't believe patching is needed, a correct bios and a chipset driver and gpu driver are typically fixes, error 43 could actually be a true hardware failure.

It's SK hynix, checked it myself. I think I found the correct bios, verified memory brand and subset ID. It's also got all the latest drivers. I'll try get isopropyl alcohol and clean out the whole GPU then test it tomorrow. I'm also borrowing a multimeter tomorrow to ensure that nothing is damaged on the card, if all else fails, someone suggested running liquid flux around the main GPU and attempting to reflow only if all other checks are good.

Reflows are temporary fix, also Eli Tech, Zettabit.lab and Actually Hardcore Overclocking on youtube may be able to point you in right direction, you would need to go online and search for yheir emails.

I will look for bios

It would seem Asus didnt care about bug fixes though like Sapphire did...
