Hello everyone,
My current rig-
FX 6300 stock
MSI 970 board
Czm Hyper 212X
Asus Strix GTX 970
4TB WD Internal HDD
Sony TV 1080P

So here i got a very good deal for Asus Rog strix Z270E and now i want a good processor so i thought of getting an I7 7700T..
My purpose is Casual weekend gaming preferably CS GO and PES games.
Just want to ask is there any significant difference between the i7 7700 version and this ES version?
Quoting the product name here-Intel core I7 7700T ES QKYL 2.4GHz 8MB 4Core 8threads 35W LGA1151 Processor CPU

So kindly guide me through.
Thanks and regards.

Engineering samples might not have the same specs as the retail version of the chip.

For example, with the i7-7700T you are looking to buy it seems the ES has a clock speed of 2.4GHz. The retail version has a clock speed of 2.9GHz. I believe the ES i7-7700T also only boosts to 3.0GHz, which is low for gaming. The retail i7-7700T boosts to 3.8GHz. Though I wouldn't go with the i7-7700T anyway, I'd get a regular i7-7700 or even better an i7-7700K(even if you don't plan to overclock, it's faster than the i7-7700).

If money is tight, you might try going with an i7-6700 or i7-6700K. I saw an ES i7-6700K on ebay for like $120 the other day. At least with the ES i7-6700K, if the default clock speeds are lower, you can just adjust it thanks to the unlocked multiplier.

The only overclocking you're going to get away with is adjusting the base clock or force a higher turbo boost over all cores. If you need to overclock then you require one of the K suffix CPUs, everything else is locked down for multiplier adjustments.

For overclocking you need a K series CPU, and a Z series board.

The T series are low wattage chips, so their performance hurts as well.
ES is engineering sample, and usually arent quite as good as the retail ones.

Even if you don't get a K CPU, the Z board lets you run faster ram, and just about any CPU on that platform is going to smoke your old FX.

You can grab a 6700K ES for around that price. It's the same CPU as the 7700K (ES).
Alroght then I'll pair my Z270E with i7 6700k ES version,it'll b compatible right?
Since i read somewhere that Asus strix Z2xx had bit compatibility issues with ES version of chips..is that so?

Yeahh that sounds a good upgrade for me..Thanks

really i only see good prices on ES chips from CHINA. if you have time to wait then perhaps you will save a few $$ and hopefully get a good chip. (i bought a ES xeon from china for my firewall and it has been running GREAT!)

depending the price you paid for the motherboard.. 3600 ryzen with a cheap x470 (under 80 usd) would be my route. but i am only going off used USA prices ;( ES 6700k looks like 200+$

Well yeah max ES chips on ebay around £100 are frm China...i can wait for them but which one should i stick with?
Am kinda confused as i7 6600k/i5 7500/i7 7700T all tagged with almost same priceline.
Since this is going to b my first switch to Intel line(have been an AMD user till date!) So this will b my long term daily driver..

Highest base clock you can afford, avoiding ES if possible.

6600K is unlocked, so its the better choice of the three you listed. 6600K at stock is absolutely enough for modern gaming, and you can overclock in the future if and when you need more performance.

long term would def stick with AMD at this point if you can get the parts i mentioned. 6600k es just seems risky to me, i love to overclock but if a stock chip can run just as well and have a future for a monster chip when prices drop....
how much was the motherboard you bought? almost free?
i suppose it doesn't matter a lot since your gfx and monitor will most likely hold you back but the 6600k is pretty far behind in performance. ryzen 1600 still beats the 6600k with the 6600k @4.8 ghz overclock.

i like the xeon low power ES chip i bought from china saved me half if i remember correct. I dont overclock it and only run it in a firewall with ECC ram

not sure how high it will overclock and be stable is only issue, the stock 6700k is 4ghz?

2.6Ghz sounds really wrong as well, i would just avoid ES completely.

that listing mentions it wont even work for you

If you haven't bought the motherboard yet, then skip the whole thing.
Whatever you'll spend on 7700T ES is probably enough to cover something decent, like brand new Ryzen 5 2600 with no headaches of engineering samples. Pair it with a mediocre B450 or x470 board and you are good to go.
Plus, engineering samples vary differently (even with the same part code). Some people reported that 7700T being able to boost only to 2.7GHz all-core stock and max-out at 3GHz overclocked. Locally we have people who still sell binned ES CPUs, which is kinda a middle-ground in this grey market. This way you can get something at a little premium over chinese stores, and already have an idea of what to expect from the CPU, but given current prices I'd rather spend a little more on a retail CPU with guaranteed spec.

Thank you everyone..learnt new stuffs.

6700k is a good chip even at stock, you'll have no issues.

There is always better options (for more money), but thats still a good gaming CPU.

That's much better. Even a non-k variant will be better than any ES, plus you won't be attached to a singular early version of BIOS.

If doing i5 9400F you will need 9th gen board, the Z270E won't work with it, you need like a Z390.
