Right now I have a Laview box with 3 dome 1080p cameras that are run with POE. I have had this setup for about 1 year + now, but am getting tired of it. It does not have the ease of use I would like and that I now see out of the NAS boxes like synology and their software suite.

Laview only offers an email report with up to 3 screenshots otherwise you have to connect to your network and look at the live feeds. The app they have is mediocre at best so I think it is time for me to move on to something with a little more advanced.

So my thought is to get a Synology? box and most likely it may be a 4 HDD one. Then run my home security through that using the 3 cameras I already have and maybe get one more dome camera.

Has anyone used the synology security setup?

Any other security setups I should look at?

Thanks!

also as another thing I forgot to mention ... I am wanting to run security and PLEX of the box... will that work or will I be setting it up for failure?

Hm I have no experience with synology as the host for such a system, generally I will use it via iscsi and let another box do the heavy lifting, reason being the CPU usage (depending on feed bit-rate and encoding requiremenets) can use alot of CPU power. If your going for an off the shelf NAS solution it might only have like a dual core atom which with added "apps" from synology like plex (also on the fly encoding) you are looking for a problem.

That isnt to say synology and qnap dont offer things that might fit the bill but they are $$. Not to mention I cant speak directly about the software.

Hmmm I’m looking into the DS918+ Or DS1618+ I’m leaning to the 6 bay just for future proof as I will fill the 4 bay up with drives right away. These are supposed to be some of the more powerful NAS that they have for the sizes. Quad core CPU etc. I have been talking with their tech support and they seem to think either of those will be fine.

Plus I was also thinking of using link aggregation to team up the 2 1GbE ports into a single connection to increase bandwidth if needed.

If thats the case id love to know the results, I have seen both of those models mentioned and am in agreement that they are said to both be fantastic units. Was looking into the DS918+ myself. however I still cant accurately speak to performance regarding your usage. Best case id order it PRIME from amazon or a company that has a generous return policy if things dont work out. Please elt me know!
