I believe my HDD on my new Lenovo SL410 just died.

I did the following:
1. Restart the computer after it froze (obviously)
2. Start in safe mode, would hang before loading windows
3. Try using System Recovery discs, again hang
4. Tried the HDD on a desktop system (both as primary and slave), the desktop computer would sometimes see the HDD but it would also hang

My question is this: I’m planning on buying a new harddrive. Does it need to be the same model/capacity in order for the System Recovery Discs to work? Lenovo didn’t include the Installation Disc :(

Thank you kindly in advance!

Other info:
Lenovo SL410
Windows 7 Home, 64-bit
Original Drive: Seagate 250GB (ST9250315AS)

I have a Gateway computer FX6801 that I made recovery disks for, I had also ordered recovery disks from Gateway. The recovery disk's specified which hard drive Windows would be placed in. To get around this I had to use TrueImage to put the operating system on another drive. To be safe you could order a hard drive which is the same model number.

I can't speak for your particular model but I have never seen recovery disks that checked the hard drive model, just CPU and motherboard. Someone else may be able to chime in on Lenovo specifically but I think you should be fine getting something else.

I should have added this, put the disk in another computer after it checks the computer, see if it specifies which hard drive it will install on or asks where it should install. It depends on the software used to make the image. Naturally don't do the install, just check the destination.

I got the same harddrive drive, just to be safe.

But I did try putting the recovery disc on another computer. It would seem to work as I got to the recovery options (but obviously didn't install the image).

It shouldn't mater as long as its the same interface. Even if it doesn't just install the version of windows from someone else's disk and call MS for a key as long as you have the COA your good. Then get the new drivers from Lenovo. But it will work
