This software is just incredibly awesome. It's remote control software... I use it to control my Quake server that has nothing more than a power cord and a ethernet cable hooked up to it (I do not have another mouse/keyboard/monitor setup, nor do I have the room for such a setup). It's easy on resources... it uses far less resources than logmein did anyway. It's quite fast, and it allows you to connect over LAN if you want to... I remember wishing I could just use my LAN connection for logmein, but I had to go over the internet. Here, I can specifically tell it to connect through the network.

If the machine is on your LAN, what is the point of using anything that cannot be started by pressing windows+r > mstsc > enter?

Unless the server doesn't run Windows, in that case SSH.

Windows XP Home doesn't support that...

Hmm... some people might do it that way. I prefer to just install teamviewer :)

ive used Real VNC for a long time and its pretty good aswell but i perfer team viewer due to the easy file transfers

i use built in RDC or ultraVNC when necessary.

I found a vnc app for my ipod touch, that despite it being a tiny screen i can log into any computer from anywhere on my wifi network(which is a rather large one, for work) ... i can do it over the internet if necessary.

not to threadjack - but if you have an extra monitor, you can set up a software KVM with "synergy" ... it allows you to host a kb/m on one computer, and use it over the network on another. it's not vnc because you need a monitor to see the other computer - but it doesn't transfer graphic info so it's incredibly fast.

It's mostly great for setups where you have a desktop and laptop next to eachother, control both machines using a single kb/mouse. Not sure if you'd want it on a server as it's annoying when your mouse goes to the other screen all the time while you only access the machine once a day or less.

exactly what i use it for. my topmost monitor here is actually a laptop sitting behind the tv. I can def understand why having it on a server is no good - I use RDC for my server as well...
