If you're ready to invest in a high-performance NAS, the TerraMaster F4-424 Max is a compelling option. With dual 10 Gbps network interfaces, a fast processor, and two PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe drive slots, it delivers impressive hardware for the price.

Would you prefer the overpriced crap now being made by Synology?

This unit from TerraMaster might be expensive and less than perfect, but it's still a solid offering for what's provided.
Only saving grace for this unit is Asustor has upgraded their 6804T with better connectivity quad NICs(2x 5Gbps + 2x 10Gbps), USB4, ECC SODIMM support but they are asking $1300 for it. There also is a UGreen NAS in this price range not sure how it compares to TerraMaster unit though.

The only Ugreen models with the same CPU is the DXP6800 Pro and DXP8800 Pro, which are six and eight bay. The DXP4800 Pro has half the CPU core count, but it's also significantly cheaper. We should hopefully be getting review units from Asustor again soon, but nothing that high-end to start with. Can you install your own OS on Asustor hardware, as that is an option for most TerraMaster hardware, if you're so inclined.

Apparently its possible to install your own OS on Asustor units(there is a guide for flashtor unit not sure if the same trick of disabling in built storage can be used for others). I remember watching interview of the rep during this year's Computex where he stated you should be able to install your own OS without Asustor blocking users.

Edit: Asustor has official guide on how to install your own OS instead of ADM.

The easiest one is without a doubt Ugreen, especially as you can easily swap out the OS drive, although in theory you have to bypass a warranty sticker to do that.
TerraMaster has the OS on an easily accessible USB drive in most of their devices, but that's a compressed image that is then installed to a drive of your choice, but you could run something like OMV from a USB drive. I guess that's not an option with some of the other third party OS options though.
At least this gives people a choice if they don't like the default OS and want a compact NAS compared to the DIY options that always end up a fair bit larger.

an old cpu from $400 laptop range and $20 ethernet chipset? I gonna pass.
plus u have to replace the OS anyway, since btrfs is kinda junky right now, and ext4 does not support CRC and Compression.

Dude, this is just embarrassing. The cheap laptops using the 1235U are the likes of older thinkpad X13 models, which still retail for around $800 new, and that model was over $1k when they came out. The cheapest 10G dual ethernet card is $53 on amazon. NAS case is gonna run you at least $200 as well.

This is like someone crowing on a forum about how they built their own car instead of overpaying for a prebuilt one like a LOSER.

The vast majority of consumers can use the built in OS without issue, and that is part of the price you are paying. That and having the warranty and support line if things go wrong.

That's YOU missing the big picture and a whole lot of scope. Good luck with that.
Big picture of what? that nobody buys this stuff, so manufactures has to crank the price to the sky? Or that we are not on techpowerup forum, and I have to behave like some random apple reddit user, who can barely plug cords correctly?

Businesses that cant sell product go out of business. Terramaster is not having that problem. The hardware is not as cheap as you believe it to be, and you also discount the cost of maintaining support for customers for years after purchase.

LOLcalmdown. Being able to set up FreeNAS doesnt make you superior to anybody else. That smug attitude IS straight off of Reddit though, so congratulations?

oh wow, when Nvidia makes crappy GPU, we all allowed to critique in comments, and here I am not allowed?
This hardware is cheap for 2025. And I am not FreeNas user. I just said that btrfs sucks compared to zfs. And Ext4 is limited.

You didn't critique the product, you merely tried to gloat that it was overpriced and lame then tried to flex that you can install FreeNas, making an absolute fool of yourself. Now you're getting defensive because people are calling you out for your attitude.

Your prices are way off from this thing we call reality.
And I am not FreeNas user. I just said that btrfs sucks compared to zfs. And Ext4 is limited.
Uh huh. So your first comment about this forcing people to DIY now means even less.

This is what we eloquently call "shitting up a thread".

i just found a lot of $400 laptops using this cpu. And found intel NIC for $20 that I can order directly from china via ali.

I just did critique the product. This product is overpriced, and it very limited on FS support out of box. And I just better go and make my own

Please link these new $400 laptops with this CPU.

Let's see it.

Your basis for the product being overpriced is you can "find a $400 laptop with this CPU". Last time I checked a $400 laptop was not a NAS. Maybe find a comparable NAS that's cheaper to make your point?

Your Filesystem complaint might have held water if you had any demonstrable idea of what you're talking about. Your personal opinions on the superiority of ZFS =! a product being bad.

I just typed i5-1235u in amazon search and got bunch of Asus Vivobook, Lenovo Idea Pad and Dell Inspiron laptops around $380-$450 price tag
Let's see it.
cheapest dual 10gb that supports only 10Gb costs $20
basic AQC113 with 1 port costs like 40$, lets say its $70 for dual.
I admit, I forgot that old intel NIC does not support 2.5/5G, so ok its $70 chipset, not $20.

I don't like that manufactures abuse consumers, and sell an overpriced box of bolts, only because "they don't have any alternatives anyway".
And this is a NAS, my filesystem complaint is valid, this is a main purpose of NAS.

Ok I got a lazy linux distro out of box, called TOS6. I understand that ZFS is too big brain for manufacturers like this. But where are other file systems? Like where is XFS, that works better on nvme drives? Hello. It becomes worse every year. They even cheap out on RAM stick, only 8GB.

My point, that overpriced and lazy products like these only boost DIY and NAS community, with products like FreeNAS, better ZFS maintenance on Debian, and even P2W products like Scale and HexOs. And new cool cases like Jonsbo N1-N4 line.

And if u want to buy it, and think its ok product, then fine by you, its ur money.
