I couldn't find an official thread for this game yet on TPU, so I decided to start one here.

Official webpage: https://www.reachthefinals.com
Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2073850/THE_FINALS/

Installed the open beta yesterday through Steam. The button said I needed approval for the beta, but it was granted instantly. I don't know if the spots are limited or not.

Hardware wise on my PC (in signature) got the following results: @2560x1080 @60Mhz, my RX5700XT with Freesync off, medium settings was avg @85% GPU load or so. RAM usage was @~12GB, but boy my CPU

drowned right away.....100% load from the moment I launched the game. There wasn't really stuttering, but the game clearly needs more CPU horsepower than a 7th gen i5. That's all I can say. I don't have an FPS meter and I can't quote what FPS I got. The integrated Steam FPS meter didn't show in this game, but it shows in Rogue Company for example. May be it is not integrated yet.

Gameplay-wise: pretty standard controls (a good thing!), if you played any multi-player shooter in the last....decade you will feel at home. There is dash!! But you can't wall run, and given how you are jumping around the arena I really miss the movement system from Titanfall/Apex Legends. They really nailed the atmosphere of feeling like you are participating in a show and you are being watched live.

One thing that I really struggle is the crosshair. Once you right-click to aim better, the crosshair disappears and you have to aim through the weapon's sight. Kinda I don't see where it is going to be honest. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave this a try and for some reason the game makes my CPU get crazy hot. All cores jump up to 80c and try to keep climbing. No idea what's going on here. Seems I am not the only one though.

I played one of the closed betas. It was pretty interesting as a concept, but it seems like it may struggle with retention as it's a sort of smash and grab game where a particular round only lasts a few minutes and you're out. I didn't get a chance to try it with a squad or friends or anything, so that certainly might help.

The current beta is an open one, so I think anybody can jump in.

Also, it's another UE5 title, many of the developers of which came from DICE originally (previous Battlefield developers who left DICE over the last several years). The graphics looked interesting, but I'm not sure yet how many bells and whistles of the new UE5 engine they're going to turn on because it'll be a title where FPS is most important (fast paced shooter). That said, I think they have the ability to fully utilize CPUs, so it'll try and fully utilize the GPU with whatever CPU power you have. I honestly expect this to be better optimized than most of the games releasing lately, but we'll see. One of their lead developers and cofounders of Embark Studios is Johan Andersson, who was one of the main creators of the Frostbite engine. So naturally, this game is really big into destruction (which is awesome).

It's free to play, which usually means excessive grind or pay money to advance and I'm curious how this game plays out for casual players. It is definitely one I've been keeping an eye on (as well as ARC Raiders, another game this developer is working on that so far looks stunning).

I felt this way to a certain aspect of the game....I miss the Titanfall/Apex movement system. I really do here. I mean the jumpads are great you are mostly flying through the arena, but...you can't wall run? you can't really propel forward, I was itching to just dash or strafe in a different way.

@ZenZimZaliben / @Bobaganoosh so I wasn't alone with the CPU. If your i7-10700K / i9-13900K is feeling the same way...ohh boy.

I was able to play 3 or 4 rounds. Once I got past the loading screen my temps all went back to normal, which in gaming is usually in the mid 50's...for every title I play. Yet on load with this game my temps would spike into the low 80's for a 10-15 seconds and if the game didn't crash and loaded the title everything went back to normal. I am wondering if they are detecting CPU capabilities prior to loading, almost like a mini-bench to gauge system performance and then loads in the title.
