A lot of the review-bombing on steam is salty buyers who can't get a refund because Steam won't refund if you've played the game for more than 2 hours.

When it takes almost 2 hours to build the shaders, and 10 minutes to realise that it's a stuttery, broken mess that won't run on their hardware, they have every right to be annoyed because the shader-building counts as gameplay time for their 2-hour refund window.

Honestly, I'm fine with shader-building but the slowest one I've experienced to date was Forza 5 and even then that was only 7-8 minutes. Even patched Callisto protocol was similar, and that was infamous for shader-building problems.

Shader comp will run the cpu at full tilt using all cores most of the time and that is the reason why faster modern cpus with more cores will complete it so much faster. It still pissed me off to see my cpu getting hammered so hard during the first half of the compilation and staying around 100 C for close to 10 minutes. That is on a stock 13700k with Noctua nh-d15s cooler running at 90% fan speed during load.

Mine was at 65c on a u12a, 12900k :D

FYI the 6950XT is selling for $569 with cpu Combo and 5% off membership discount at microcenter. The 7900 xtx fell to $979 ( $930 after discount by ASRock) and 4080 fell to $1129 by PNY ($1073 after discount ) .

The game looks good, there's no denying that but the fact that a 4090 (which I have) is needed for 4K 60+fps is ridiculous and shows a lack of optimization. The least they could have done is implement FSR of DLSS despite those being crutches.
Actually if you look up the Digital Foundry video on the performance of this game, the PC visuals are not a lot better than the PS5 version running performance mode. For GPUs with 8GB of VRAM, user will be forced to play at the medium quality settings, which is a serious visual downgrade.

The 3070 is getting beaten by a 3060 here. Not much more than needs to be said, most people knew from the start that 8GB was not enough for the card.
RTX 3070 8GB overtaked by RTX 3060 12 GB, thats shows that VRAM is really important in this game.
3070 has lower frequencies and likely choking in its power limit. 3070 Ti would likely scale proportionally. 6600 XT 8 GB is getting much closer to 6700 XT 12 GB in 4K. 70% in favor of 6700 XT in 1080p, but only 50% in 4K. So 12 GB is loosing a lot to 8 GB. VRAM usage still likely be at least 2 times less than allocated. Likely even 3 times.

I skimmed that video and it looks like the launch-day 2-hour shader compilation has been fixed.

40 minutes on a Ryzen 3600 now which is slow, but that is an older, weaker CPU by today's standards.

You are not forced to play at "Medium" on an 8 GB VRAM card. I could play it no problems with a mix of "High" and "Medium". The 1.6 GB the game allocates for the OS and Apps is just a guideline and actually much smaller.

OK? So you are confirming my point, the PC port is a piss poor optimized game compared to console.
PS5 build exceeds 8GB VRAM allocation. LOL. There's a reason for AMD's PC DX12U GPUs usually have a higher VRAM.

10-30 minutes? Some people are saying 1-2 hours, including multiple crashes and having to restart the game to continue building the shaders. I'm inclined to believe that because streamers broadcast this happening as they tried to play and that's why this has blown up in the both the independent and social media.
It took me 40 minutes on an i7-10700K, no crashes

Yep, sounds about right. Digital Foundry said that the shader compilation time had been nearly halved due to improvements from patches since launch and that the constant patching and state of change is why they hadn't put it a video on this game in their usual format.

It'll probably get faster still as this half-baked game gets finished properly over the next month or two.

The relevant medium setting is mainly the texture issue that affects artwork.

I bet I could activate it if I launched the game with no DE as going from "Medium" to "High" on that setting seems to be 100 MB.

Setting the Environments Texture Quality to medium while the other textures to high will result in 9399 MB estimated VRAM usage and this includes OS + other apps VRAM usage. The game itself has a 7793 MB estimate. PC OS multitasking usage needs to be restricted to reduce OS + other apps' VRAM usage.

Setting includes ambient shadow quality at half resolution, point lights shadow resolution at medium, screen space reflection accuracy at 75%, volumetric effects quality at medium and 'etc'.

I have RTX 3070 Ti 8 GB in my living room gaming PC with AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, ASUS ROG Strix X570 Gaming-E, 32 GB DDR4-3400 (DDR4-3600 rated). This is my former primary gaming PC (with RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB that was sold to fund RTX 4090) which I replaced with AM5 based system.
