Thinking about upgrades

In the last couple of days I have been pondering just switching out my current rig to Intel. I definitely would want to go quad core.

Will I be happy by just going to the Q6600, or do I need to lay down the big bucks for a higher end quad core.

Also, I would need a good solid motherboard for the quad core. Any recommendations?

...this would be my first Intel system. AND I want this upgrade to last me a good 2 years.

Your current rig seems to be good in today's tech world. I have just a few questions though.
How much would your budget be for motherboard + quad cpu?
Would you mind waiting a month or so for the new Intel quads to come out?

Keep in mind that if you wait for the rest of the penryn quads to arrive onto the market, your rig will be more futureproof and will be able to last quite a while.

I guess I shouldn't spend more money that what it would cost for the Q6600 and a mid-priced mobo.

How long until the penryn quads come out. Will they cost a ton more than the quads that are out today?

keep what you have buy a 6400+ black edition 159.00 overclock it to 3.5ghz or 3.6ghz. in six months buy a new quad from AMD if needed when they get the bugs out and begin to strike back. Buy this black edition for 120.00 and sell you current chip for 100.00 upgrading for 20.00 and seeing about a 20 percent increase in speed http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=51103 and wait. The AMD dual core 6400+ for sure are still very fast and are a match for most of the core 2 duos.

Thats sounds like the best solution right now. My current processor is really holding me back.

email him fast at 120.00 shipped that chip will be gone. I had the private message typed myself and canceled it . I alomost bought it for my father inlaw. That black edition does 3.8ghz

I think it will pay off if you would wait for a little bit. The new 45nm Q6600-like processor is going to cost around the same but its going to give you a noticeable 10% increase in performance and overclocking headroom. My suggestion would be buy a decent P35 board such as a DFI Blood Iron which is around the $120 range and get the Q9350/9450(not sure which one) which will cost roughly around the same as the Q6600 and you will be set.

na the new Q9450 is gonna cost 350.00 thats what they are preorderd for now. AMD will have new quads out thats will rock by the end of the year. That black edition for 20.00 after he sells his old 5600+ will hold him a year or more thats a very fast chip about equal to a e6600 e6550

I will say though that the black edition is a good investment in the meantime if your impatient to wait. My friend has one and that thing hits 3.7 with his cnps9700.

Oh ok, yea I wasn't certain about the price. Looks like its going to take a while for it to fall down just like the Q6600 did. I can't wait for the newer phenoms to come out either. Hopefully they will be competitive against Intel's offerings.

I don't feel comfortable buying that processor from someone who has already oc'd it. You never know.

I'm just going to get a new one from Newegg.

Who is going to give 100 dollars for my 5600+?

ebay my friend, ebay

The 6400 in combination with my Zalman CPU cooler is going to kick ass!

I don't need the cooler but my father inlaw will get a vastly better chip for 80.00 more money. If he takes paypal it's gone baby gone. Now I need to sell a week old Brisbane. The little bastard does 3.0ghz without breaking a sweat.
