Hello,

i am far from being an expert in pc hardware and i would like to upgarde my PC so i need some help.
Right now i have the following components:
  • CPU: Intel i7 8700
  • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400
  • GPU: R9 290
  • Mainboard: ASRock Z370 Pro4
  • Storage: Samsung 870 QVO 1TB, M2 - Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB
  • Power supply: 600W be quiet! Straight Power PCGH Edition Modular 80+

At the moment i just play League of Legends and WoW with it so the setup is kinda "okayish".
Also i often use my second monitor to surf in the internet or watch youtube videos.

But now i would like to play some "newer" games at WQHD with medium to high settings.
My question is what should i upgarde (first) to have good resutls with a propper price/performance ratio.
I want something that is future proof but i don't need to be able to play everything on max settings and would rather prefer a quiet and not super power consumption solution.

I think my biggest problem is the graphics card and i don't like it because it is loud and gets pretty warm even when just playing wow and having the browser open at the second monitor :D
My buget for a new one would be ~500€ and do you think i should wait a bit longer for a purchase because gpu prices are dropping at the moment.

Thank you for your help,

imo you just need a GPU upgrade for now. It's a 9 year old GPU. Time to move past it.

6700xt. It's ~450$
You can use the same power supply.

Or you can add a hard disk if you're currently filled up with the 2tb. Just a normal hdd for slower archives.

Yeah i did some more research and i will probebly buy a 6700XT, 3060 Ti or 3070.

But i will wait a few weeks and then see what happens to the price because a lot of people on youtube suspect even a bigger drop because of the next generation and full warehouses of the current/"old" generation models.

Your system is ok. You just need a gpu in the 3060Ti/3070 tier of performance.

You could buy a second hand 2080Ti/3070 and call it a day.
(+1 for the 2080Ti. The 11GB VRAM will be useful the next couple of years)

Smart move here, that 'must have now' mindset is hard to overcome.

you could also try springing for a used 1080, pascal is still great all these years later.

Better to spend a little more and get a 6600

Retailer inventory of current generation (Ampere and RDNA2) cards is very high right now. While prices have been dropping steadily for the past few months, I expect an even greater price drop once the first of the next generation cards is launched.

Don't just wait a few weeks: wait until the next gen graphics cards arrive. Then you will find massive bargains.

If you wait a bit you should be able to grab maybe even a 3080 at that price range soon after the 4000 series gets announced tho I doubt that PSU would be able to hold up. Lower end would be a better match for your system (stock clocks cpu/slow ram) but i doubt prices will drop that much on the more budget cards. Pricing aside i certainly wouldnt go above 6700xt/3060ti on your system.

Yeah i might do that but it depends also on the drops of the next weeks.

So while i now trinekd to get more information about gpu s and the current situation i think there a some factors that could possibly make the prices drop even more in the next weeks/month.

1. Etherium is stoping the mining with gpu that makes a big shift for the used marekt and when that drops als the "new" products drop.
2. The new generation of gpu s will make the "current/"old" gen drop in price

True that could be possible because the new gpus will launch at the higher tiers first.
But tbh at the moment AMD is ahead for me because i do not care about ray tracing and without that the fps/money spend is better for the current prices of amd cards.

Yeah that is maybe a good idead i'll wait and see what changes within the next few weeks or months and decide then.
Because moneywise i also could afford a higher tier moddle but right now i don t feel like spending a lot more money for only a bit more power so the (for me) mid range models are my sweetspot where i would concidder buying it.

DLSS 2 is really good for mid range cards - is the only reason I would go for nvidia esp at wqhd - FSR 2.0 isn’t quite there yet.

Well i have a 9 year old gpu the must have point is long gone i wanted to buy a new gpu when the nvidia 2070 was released but i was too cheap/greedy to pay the inital price even though i could have afforded it but prices just skyrocked afterwards so i waited until now :D

For what its worth. Historically, when next gen cards release, last gen prices generally go up or stay the same but rarely go down.

True, usually you will see them go to their lowest prices a month before the new cards are released, then they will go up a few dollars below the new cards to help their sales just as they are released. So, my best guess is that we should see that at the end of September.

dude you have a core i7 processor your computer should be pretty good. if you have a decent enough psu you should try to get the best video card that your computer and psu can handle that is in your budget.

xfx 6700xt...me and a good friend both bought them at 465$ a few weeks back.....they overclock well to incredible with a bump in voltage...I opted for the non rbg Qick...it looks clean. Takes 2 power inputs from the PSU too, so i've seen over 300watts on mine.. with nothing but Morepowertool and wattman. 2800mhz+ on core 2150 on mem, stock cooler...I think the key with these 6700s is buying the brands that get the higher binned parts...I easily put on 20-23% fps depending on game stock vs OC'd.. and I run it daily....never see above 87c or so on the hot spot.. mid 60s to 70 on the regular temp reading..There is an endwalker bench thread going on here..,. to give you an idea of where you can be with a well setup gpu bound 6700xt thats oc'd....On other benches its right with the 2080ti's and 3070s... etc. some nvidia counterpart wins some 6700xt, and for me, the drivers have been solid. and i've gained a good chunk of performance through drivers.. which felt good...It would run well with that 8700 if you slap some skante on the cpu/gpu :)

this graph is 1440p max settings..

hope the owner doesnt mind me snagging it to use as example. My name is attached to the score. for 400-450$ new for these cards.,,,I think its a steal if you're needing something now for interim...and they'll always have a decent resale value. Especially u opt for xfx or something nice.

cheers.
