Guys I need some advice on a possible video card upgrade. I currently use an r9 290 with a 2k 144hz monitor.
I am evaluating a possible switch to one of these vga: gtx 1650 super, rx 5500 xt 4GB, rx 580 4GB.
In your opinion, considering only these three vga and not others, are the improvements in performance visible or negligible?

Well a R9 290 is about on par with a stock RX 570 which I also used for nearly 3 years.

1650 super is about ~RX 580 depending on the game same goes for the 5500 xt.

We pretty much talking about an upgrade from RX 570 to 580+ somewhat so eh personally I would say it does not worth it.
I went from my RX 570 to a decently clocked GTX 1070 and even this was a bare minimum upgrade step imo. 'same as upgrading to a ~1660 Super/Ti'

I also use a less demanding resoulution, 2560x1080 75Hz so you would need an even bigger jump to feel the upgrade.
Something in the range of a RTX 2060/3060/RX 6600/XT or so at least. 'GTX 1080/Ti/5600XT on the used market'

All of them are upgrades, just not massive ones.

Get whatever is cost effective for you - but be aware none of those GPU's are going to run that res and refresh rate on max settings
(I mean literally, that's what i run - and i need a 3090 to maintain high settings, let alone ultra in some titles)

we know nothing at all about the system you're planning to put the GPU In, which might alter the advice too
^ filling that out will help, a lot.

None of them. Grab a 5600, 5600XT, 5700 BNIB.

OK thanks. All clear. So with the VGAs indicated by me I would notice only the small increase in performance
(I also updated my system specs)

It's more like a side grade then an upgrade you probably not going to notice any gains in FPS or in best case scenario a few more.....the only thing that you can benefit with those GPU's is less heat&fan noise and much better power consumption......

On a side note.

Anything more modern will draw a lot less power at the wall as well as run a lot cooler than your R9 290

Most of those are small upgrades, and IMO not worth it. 1660 6gb , 5600xt , or 580 8gb . It's almost a waste of cash to buy any of the 3 you listed for < 20% gains.

If I needed a card right now the best bang for your buck would be a RX 6600 but these are starting to go up as well. Maybe even an RTX 2060 12gb if you can find one.

Everything you buy right now that is less than 500-ish € (550 USD), is a side-grade, like people have mentioned. Save up money and wait for the next generation. Much love.

Edit: I was planning on buying an RX 6800, which would be a great upgrade for my old Vega, but prices were insane at lauch and still are. So I have been waiting for a new GPU since "forever". But the more I want to buy one, at the end of the day, I find myself always with the same answer, wait. :banghead:

You did not list your current R9 290 specs, but if it has 4 GB of videoRAM, you need something with at least (??) 8 GB for any reason to do it. :)
Going to another 4 GB card, as they told you above is pointless.
And 6 GB is more than 4 GB, but likely not a good idea too. It depends on the games you want to play though.

Also, when you said '2K monitor' what exactly did you mean - 1080p or 1440p?
(Hint: They are not the same resolution.)

The only reason to do this upgrade is to have fresh drivers for new games. But I'd personally wait and save for something more significant. 25% difference isn't worth spending on.

If it does what you need it to do keep it for a while. Prices might come down (fingers crossed) this year.

Yea....the word is "might".
But as we see the supply and the demand are not even.
So i doubt it will.
