j0 all. The quest for a laptop continues. Now I've found an acer aspire 3680 with a Celeron M 420. A 1.6 Ghz celeron, not reason to throw a party.

So the simple question is: Can I upgrade the CPU on this thing? To let's say a Core Duo T2300 or T5500 or something like that?

As long as they are Skt M procs you should have no problems upgrading the CPU. Also here is a spec sheet on the laptop which should give you a good handle on what CPU's it should support.
