Upgrading GeForce 315

Hi guys,

I have an Acer Aspire Desktop M3910.

Intel i5 Duo 3.2GHz
3GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce 315 1GB shared
300w PSU

I would like to upgrade my graphics card but obviously as you can imagine the 315 is quite small. I didn't buy the computer for high-end gaming, I only really play The Sims 3 (which runs fine) and some others. The new SimCity has just been released, and when I played the beta, it ran awfully.

I don't want to upgrade to a high-end card as I'm not one for max settings, but smooth framerates with mid-high graphics would be perfect.

I also would like to upgrade my RAM.

Do you know of any graphics card I could upgrade to? I want to spend about £50+. I can also upgrade my PSU.

Any help would be great!

Sim City ran horribly probably because it is a horribly coded game.

Also 50+ budget doesn't really give us a max, and a 50 euro card, won't need a new PSU anyways. What retailer do you buy from over there so we can link you some cards?

you should increase your budget and buy a gtx 650 ti which will last you awhile
EVGA 01G-P4-3650-KR GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 128-bit...

Even a 650 Non Ti would be pretty solid I would think

EVGA 01G-P4-2650-KR GeForce GTX 650 1GB 128-bit GD...

Sorry, what I meant to put was £50 - £80 really. I can increase it if necessary, but the cheaper the better obviously. I know that isn't easy with graphics cards.

I tend to use www.ebuyer.com as they are the cheapest I've found in this country.

Thanks for the help.

Is this card the same? (Sorry for my ignorance, dealing with graphics cards isn't my area of expertise) Gigabyte GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 VGA Dual DVI HDMI PCI-E...

nah that's the non-Ti model which is not worth it because for just a little more you get 2x more cuda cores 384 vs 768

yeah the non ti would be fine but 2x more cores for 1.5x the price is worth it

Thanks guys.

This really has helped. I've been at my wits end for a while!

Also, I take it upgrading my PSU is pretty simple? I was thinking of either 500w or 600w.

I want to keep upgrading gradually until I can't any more basically, I know the processor isn't great, but like I say it's fine for what I do. (Mainly video editing, browsing)

So as soon as my processor starts letting me down I'll invest in another computer all together.

It was bought in 2011 and I had hoped for it to last around 5/6 years. To be completely honest, I asked the guy in store when buying it for one with a decent graphics card as I plan on playing SOME games, why he pointed me towards this system I will never know. Obviously for a quick sale. I am very disappointed with the graphics card, luckily that's the only part I'm disappointed about.

I think I will buy online next time, or build my own.

yeah, that's always the bad part about buying from local retailer. You usually won't be all to impressed with some of the parts in that system.

but yeah if you upgrade to one of the 650ti we have recommended, one of the PSUs and then the 8GB memory kit I showed. Should be a pretty good improvement.

You can't really buy enthusiast gaming systems in stores (PCWorld, Dixons, Curry's) at best you'll get a powerful processor with a underpowered video card or vice versa. And if you're lucky enough to find one it'll cost twice as much as building your own!

Now, looking at your specification, it could last 5-6 years as a general computer for word processing, browsing the internet, multimedia, but not gaming.

Going back to your original question. £50 won't get you anything gaming worthy from this generation. If you don't mind second hand £50 could buy you a ATI 5770/5750/4870/4850 tier card from 2008-2010. Isn't ideal but leaps and bounds better than your GeForce 315.
