TPU,

As My title read's, I need to find a New GPU for My nephew's Dell Optiplex 7010 "Small Form Factor".
From what I understand, after chatting with Dell support, The Case will ONLY hold a "Low Profile" Card type.
Now, My problem is this, My nephew wants to be able to run games like Battlefield, Call of Dookie, and the like, So the question I'm faced with is....

What "Low Profile" GPU will hold up to His gaming preferences?(I have ZERO experience with Low Profile GPUs)...The Card will NEED to be a "Add in" type...Meaning There is NO PCI-E Plug available from the Built in PSU.

If anyone could make a recommendation based off of personal experience, or personal knowledge of said GPU's, I would GREATLY appreciate the assistance.

Below::This is just Me thinking "out Loud" so to speak... if anyone has experience , or something constructive to add regarding this idea please feel Free. However, I prefer to just buy the New GPU, and keep the small form factor, even though it is a Pain in My ass.

There is ONE other factor that comes to My mind when I was faced with this problem as well......
I Wonder if I could just Swap the cases...Meaning pull out the ALL of the components and re-install them into a case that is a Variant of the "ATX" class. My thinking here, is that I could save $$$ because a LOT of the Low Profile GPU's cost More and have less HP.Like your paying for the fact that the components are stuffed into a Smaller package...(which I can understand). I know from Experience that those Optiplex PC's can be a Pain to transfer, and I can see the PSU becoming a factor during the switch as well.

thanks in Advance to anyone who chimes in with useful help.

dell motherboards are usually custom so putting it in another case would be quite difficult
A 750Ti is about the best you're going to get in as far as low profile which isn't a very powerful card

Thanks for the Reply.
I hate having to pay SO much of a premium for a small card....UGH!! I may end up just leaving the side panel off, and going with a normal Form factor card. The 750ti IS about the end of the line, without upgrading to a PSU that has additional PCI-E Power plugs, Since the Factory Optiplex Supplies don't have a Power plug, So the Cards need to be "add in" Only.

If I DO go with a "regular" sized Card, I can get a 750ti 2Gb from NewEgg @$99USD after Rebate. Esthetics MIGHT take a backseat to cost on this build.

I spoke to a friend of mine who works for Dell, and he told Me that some of the Optiplex components will fit into a Larger size Optiplex case(of the same or Close to the Same year of release)...i.e. the Normal Form Factor type Optiplex. I MIGHT see if I,or He has a Spare full sizer laying around.Apparently they are all made same or similar, and just put into different sized cases, depending on the customers need. e.g. Small Form Factor for Business, and ATX style for Residential, etc...Fingers crossed, Since THAT would be Optimal.

off topic , but....BTW.... I used to Work in Aberdeen MD(actually closer to Havre de Grace)..I loved Baltimore, Last time I was there I was pulled over for going the Wrong way down a oneway(@ 3AM...after a Few too many), and the Cop NOT only let Me off, but escorted Me to the 95North on-ramp, and told Me to take My ass home.God I love MD. thanks again

If you find a more powerful low profile card, which I doubt, then use a molex to 6 pin power adapter to connect it if needed.
Swapping the proprietary components to a larger version case of the same model is a good idea.

I recently helped someone shop for a video card for an older HP SSF. What a pain in the butt! Turns out many MBs in SFFs only supply 25W, compared to typical PCI-Es that do 75W. I was able to verify that this was the case with his, and he got a GT 720 which was about as good as he could get without upgrading something else. So dig into the details and see if his Dell is similar.

Dells aren't made to be upgraded for gaming. SFFs *really* aren't. If computer gaming is going to be a significant passion for him, even a GTX 750 Ti won't satisfy for long.
