Hello all. I just put together a simple low end rig for my father in-law's corner store to record and view security surveillance. Now he wanted it cheap as could be and he had an old Gateway 2000 case laying around, talk about solid metal 35lbs case haha. Anyways the power switch cable/wire is before my time. doesn't connect to the mobo but to some ancient block thing.

My question is, can i just use the reset button and place the wires on the power on/off pins on my mobo?

Yes no problem with this

sweet, i figured as much, just wanted to double check.

The spring switch simply shorts a pair of pins for a moment, pulling the PWR_ON line (normally at 5V) low. Literally any non-toggle switch will do.

lol funny you ask that, when i built my rig i was drunk. my power button is my reset button, and my power button is my reset button...so yes its fine to use it

Stay thirsty my friends

Hmm. Come to think of it, in my 15 years of assembling PCs, I have never been drunk "on the job".

Am I actually missing something there?

Then you've probably never wondered from where those finger cuts came after you've woken up :p

those big old switches are the same as the on/off on the back of modern PSU's. you should make sure the PSU has been updated in the case, or else he'll shut the PC off and it wont actually turn off.

i built a whole new um old p4 rig, 2gb ram, and 550watt antec trupower(the old one) on XP sp3, i'd say its good to go ;). I'd forgotten how few processes xp has, 22 compared to the 52 or so on win7. even though that p4 is old it runs pretty smooth on xp

that was showing in my mind as i wrote the post. been years since i saw that last.

my customised XP build (corporate, silent installer w/ key preinstalled) uses 90MB of ram on idle :) no good for a modern gaming PC, but damn nice for a HTPC/workstation.

pretty sure that is a requirement

shit i knew i was doing it wrong, with me its all about blood. if the system draws blood, it'll work great.

no blood? endless problems with the build.

blood only works if you totally screwed things up and you need to make a blood sacrifice to the PC gods.

even my routers feast on blood. heatsinks in particular love a good sacrifice.

That's because of all your sins.

holy admin who art in modCP,
w1zzard be thy name,
delete thy infractions
i wish i knew more religious shit to mock,
la di da i'm mussels.

i was told heatsinks won't work properly without blood flowing freely over them.
