I' new to this forum, so if I'm in the wrong place, please forgive me.

I've enclosed laptop hard drives to use as a backup external hd, but never a desktop hard drive.

I bought a suggested enclosure from Amazon, but it didn't work...no power, so I returned it. I'm just not savvy enough to know which case is the right one for this hd. I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money.

Thanks for the help.

Desk top Enclosures need a external or Built in PSU as Desktop Drives require 12v
Laptop Drives can get the power they need from USB
Did the Amazon enclosure come with a external PSU ?

No info about the drive, or the enclosure that did not work.

As dorsetknob said you need one with a psu / powered such as one like this

Thanks, but I live in the US and not the UK. I tried to find these on US Amazon, but didn't see it.

If you had Contacted Amazon ( The supplier) they would either exchange the PSU ( and enclosure) or send you a Replacement
( you might have struck lucky and got a replacement enclosure with out sending the original back enabling you to have 2 enclosures and to share the Psu as needed and they may have given you a gift certificate as compo on top).

Thanks, I've already made arrangements with Amazon to return this item. I read that others had the same problem with it, so I don't want another one.

I have a couple of Orico's USB 3.0 enclosures and their Docking station they work and are high both my WD RED's and the single WD Purple I have get the same speed in the enclosure and docking station as they do on internal sata so that's nice.

Amazon US Links:
ORICO Tool Free 3.5-inch USB 3.0 to SATA III External Hard Enclosure Case for 3.5'' HDD [UASP and 8TB Supported]

ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station - Supports 8TB, for 2.5 & 3.5 Inch HDD SSD with 3.3 Ft. USB Cable - Black

I think for the price they are really good compared to others that are more expensive.

i have this one:

Despite still Usb 2.0 i like it, reliave enough, as shown in the picture it does require external power (power adapter included) aluminium body, easy to assemble, cheap as f*ck,

also have this other one:

This little babe came with a SSD upgrade kit, right now have a 1TB 2.5 Dive, also have a 60GB SSD, reliable pretty portable and this one does not require additional power, usb 2.0 as far as i know,

have had a external drive dock, was pretty useful, easy to use, that another decent recommendation.

Regards,
