I scanned 2 hard drives using HD Tune Pro 5.50 and this was the result:

Hard Disk 1 (Samsung)

Hard Disk 2 (Hitachi)

HD1 is a lot better. Look at the average transfer speed (higher the better) and access time (lower the better). The Samsung is almost twice as fast at transfers and the access time is almost half of the Hitachi. Note that the graph appears quite different between the two because of the Samsung is so much faster.

Samsung made some bad ass drives. I miss them

HGST still makes some bad ass drives (Ultrastars), but Samsung made some badass drives that were consumer oriented (didn't cost an arm and a leg). They will definitely be missed.

One other one I haven't seen in a while is Fujitsu. Did they stop making HDs alltogether or what? I never tried one so I can't comment on their quality, but I've seen some ANCIENT ones in laptops that are still working. Mostly IDE...

If you look at the health tab it will say the drive is ok or if it has problems

I guess fujitsu already stopped making HDs..

fujitsu would not touch one with a barge pole.

Fujitsu -> Toshiba

Toshiba is still around. Prior to WD buying out Hitachi, Toshiba only did 2.5" drives. WD only got the 2.5" Hitachi property while the 3.5" property was given to Toshiba. Toshiba now makes 2.5" and 3.5"

Ah. So basically Toshiba got the Deskstar line, Hitachi's finest (Sarcasm). WD meanwhile got the awesome Ultrastar and semi-ok Travelstar line. I pity Toshiba.
